Gross Area Irrigated
Gross area irrigated includes the net
area irrigated and the area irrigated more than
once. Gross area irrigated by all sources
during 09-10 is 3238234 ha as against
3393106 ha during 08-09 registering a
decrease of 154872 ha (4.6%).
Irrigation Intensity
The irrigation intensity (The ratio of
gross area irrigated to net area irrigated) is
1.13 for the state during 09-10 The ratio is
significantly high in the districts of
Kanyakumari (1.31), Thanjavur (1.24),
followed by Thiruvallur, Thiruvannamalai, ND
Dharmapuri with (1.23).
5. AREA IRRIGATED UNDER DIFFERENT CROPS
Out of the total irrigated area, 52.9% is
under Paddy, 9.1% under Sugarcane and
4.8% under Groundnut.

the Gross area sown and irrigated are shown
in the follwing table.
