Considering the area irrigated under<br />

different <strong>crop</strong>s, the following picture had<br />

emerged for <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong>:<br />

production thanks to significant jack up in yield<br />

rate.<br />

tonnes during 2008-09 to 75 lakh tonnes in<br />

<strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong>, increase being 5.6 %. Production of<br />

cereals rose by 5.3 % from 69 lakh tonnes to<br />

73 lakh tonnes. Pulses increased from 1.67<br />

lakh tonnes to 2 lakh tonnes, showing a<br />

growth of 22.1%. Thus the decline in area<br />

coverage had adequately been compensated<br />

Area under total food <strong>crop</strong>s<br />

declined by 4 % from 42 lakh ha. during 2008-<br />

09 to 41 lakh ha. in <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong>. Dip in area is<br />

noticed for Paddy (4.5%), Cholam (7.9%),<br />

Ragi (8.6%) <strong>and</strong> other millets (12.8%). With<br />

respect to non-food <strong>crop</strong>s the area decreased<br />

from 15.5. lakh ha to 14.73 lakh ha, the fall<br />

being 5.3 per cent. The aggregate total area<br />

by increase in production <strong>and</strong> yield rate.<br />

Paddy, the staple <strong>crop</strong> of the<br />

State, witnessed a moderate decrease in area,<br />

whereas production <strong>and</strong> yield rate increased<br />

sizably. Season-wise, kuruvai recorded a fall<br />

in all aspects – area, production <strong>and</strong> yield rate<br />

whereas samba clocked positive signs in<br />

terms of area, production <strong>and</strong> yield rate. In the<br />

case of Navarai, there was a dip in area<br />

covered but increase in yield rate. Dip in<br />

production is noticed with respect to ragi,<br />

maize, sugarcane, chillies, groundnut, gingelly,<br />

sunflower, etc., Yield rate fell in the case of<br />

bengalgram, turmeric, sugarcane, tapioca,<br />

banana etc.,<br />

under all <strong>crop</strong>s dwindled by 4.3 per cent from<br />

58.2 lakh ha. to 55.72 lakh ha. However, the<br />

decline in area under major <strong>crop</strong>s had not<br />

significantly impinged upon total agricultural<br />
