Ragi<br />

The area under Ragi constitutes<br />

about 1.5% of the total <strong>crop</strong>ped area in the<br />

state in 09-<strong>10</strong>. Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri,<br />

Salem, Erode <strong>and</strong> Vellore districts together<br />

accounted for 94.5% of the total area of<br />

82335 ha under this <strong>crop</strong> during 09-<strong>10</strong>.The<br />

Krishnagiri <strong>and</strong> Dharmapuri districts alone<br />

share 71.1%.<br />

Perambalur, Thiruppur, Salem, Virudhunagar,<br />

Erode, <strong>and</strong> Thoothukudi districts <strong>and</strong> they<br />

together share 69.7 % of the total area under<br />

this <strong>crop</strong> in the state.<br />

Korra <strong>crop</strong> accounted for 0.4 % (<strong>10</strong>74 ha) of<br />

the total area under other cereals. Major part<br />

of Korra is grown in the districts of Salem,<br />

Villupuram, Virudhunagar <strong>and</strong> Madurai.<br />

Varagu <strong>crop</strong> is mainly sown under rain-fed<br />

conditions in the districts of, Cuddalore,<br />

Villupuram <strong>and</strong> Ariyalur. The area under<br />

Varagu contributed 2.1% (5930 ha) of the total<br />

area under other millets.<br />

Samai <strong>crop</strong> covers 8.0% (22292 ha) of the<br />

total area under other cereals. Samai <strong>crop</strong> is<br />

generally sown in less fertile soil as a mixture<br />

<strong>crop</strong> with pulses through out the year<br />

regardless of the <strong>season</strong>s. Dharmapuri district<br />

alone shares 51.0% of the Samai area in the<br />

state.<br />

Apart from this, other cereal Kudiraivali is<br />

also grown in TamilNadu, mostly in Madurai,<br />

Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi <strong>and</strong><br />

Ramanathapuram districts. And Panivaragu is<br />

grown mostly in Salem district. The Area <strong>and</strong><br />

production of small millets are shown in the<br />

following table.<br />

Maize, Wheat, Korra, Varagu, Samai,<br />

Kudhiraivali <strong>and</strong> Panivaragu constitue “other<br />

cereals” which are sparsely grown in the state.<br />

These <strong>crop</strong>s are mainly cultivated in rain-fed<br />

conditions <strong>and</strong> the area under these millets<br />

accounted for 277514 ha or 5.0 % of the total<br />

area under cereals during 09-<strong>10</strong>.<br />

Maize is the major contributor accounting for<br />

88.0% (244159 ha) of the total area under<br />

other cereals. It is mainly grown in Dindigul,<br />

Pulses<br />

Of the 3034124 ha under Foodgrains,<br />

the area under Pulses was 535819 ha<br />

which constitutes 17.7%. These <strong>crop</strong>s can be<br />

raised both in rainfed <strong>and</strong> irrigated conditions.<br />

They comprise of Redgram, Greengram,<br />

Blackgram, Horsegram, Bengal gram,<br />

Cowpea, Mochai, Naripayaru etc.<br />
