18 TÜRSAB DERGİ | HAZİRAN 2013 Spil Dağı’nın çevresinde derin vadiler ve bunların içerisinde dere yatakları bulunuyor. Deep canyons with stream beds around Mt. Spil.
Yamaç paraşütü, dağcılık, yürüyüş, bisiklet, mağaracılık ve off road Spil Dağı’nı ziyaret eden macera meraklılarının ilgilendiği aktivitelerin başında geliyor. Bunların hiçbirini yapamasanız bile yürüme parkurunda bir yürüyüş yapmayı unutmayın. Dağın güzel havasını içinize çekmeniz bile kendinizi daha iyi hissetmenizi sağlayacak. Ağlayan Kaya’yı görün Spil Dağı deyince aklımıza gelecek en önemli özelliklerden Let me tell you about the most importing thing relating to Mt. Spil first: the wandering Yılkı horses of Mt. Spil are comparable in importance to the height of Mt. Ararat, the volcanic features of Mt.Erciyes, and the endemic characteristics of Mt. Kaz (known as Ida in ancient times). While Mt. Spil hosts these great animals, it’s not that easy to see them. Not being used to people, these wild animals prefer to stay away. We’ll talk later about the Yılkı horses, but first let’s take a trip on Mt. Spil, the pearl of the Aegean, and store that rich oxygen as we amble through multicolored tulips in the woods. Though Spil, a mountain of 1517 meters, is situated between Manisa and Izmir, it’s generally associated with Manisa. Spil is 24 kms from Manisa and 50 kms from Izmir via the south road and was awarded the title of “National Park” in 1968. The mountain and its vicinity have an abundance of natural resources. The area surrounding Mt. Spil looks just like a country painting with deep canyons and streams flowing into the canyons. Another feature of the mountain is that it is covered with very thick forest canopy. This park is protected so carefully that not even one tree can grow “off the books,” so to speak. That is why, the mountain covered with pinewood is an ideal course for taking a fresh air in a forest. Mt. Spil has a rich flora including several endemic species. In addition to the famous wild horses we just talked about, you can see other wild animal species. Stop Over in the Bungalows There is a flat region named the “horse area” or the “picnic area” on Mt. Spil. Bungalows of many different sizes located there offer lodging opportunities on the mountain. The geographic advantages of the mountain offer good means for various sports activities. Paragliding, climbing, trekking, bicycling, speleology and off-roading are the leading activities for adventurers visiting Mt. Spil. Even if you don’t do any of these activities, don’t skip a walk in the walking track. Even just taking a deep breath of the mountain air makes you feel better. See that Crying Rock When we talk about Mt Spil, one of the most important features that we recall is the Crying Rock. It’s not known whether this rock, also named “Niobe Rock,” situated at the foot of the mountain, is a natural work or a work of art. Some say that this is the shape of a crying woman with a bowed head that was formed by natural erosion. There are some who claim that it is a work of art left from Ancient Greece. When considering natural events, it seems more reasonable to say that the rock was formed by erosion. According to the stories handed down to us through Greek Mythology, it’s believed that Niobe, a daughter of Phrygian Tantalus, became a symbol of sorrowful mothers who shed tears for their lost children, was transformed into a rock here by Zeus. By the way, an amphitheater was recently constructed near the Rock. Over time, writing emotional messages and putting them on the ground has become a tradition among visitors to the rock visitors. Whether you believe that the rock is the result of natural forces or a remnant of Greek Mythology, it is Niobe, no matter. The only important thing here is not to pass here without seeing that beautiful work. Yılkı Horses: Free and Powerful What’s well known is that Yılkı horses are one of the most beloved themes of nature photographers. As we stated before, it’s not that easy to observe these pretty animals, the subject of documentaries and photography contests, because Yılkı horses are unlikely to get close to people on their own. The story of these horses that are very fond of their freedom is a bit poignant. The herds are the offspring of older, incapacitated horses that were left in the forest by their owners. Their sturdy offspring have increased in number over the years and thrive owing to a life style of their own. Yılkı horses live in a herd of 10-12 TÜRSAB DERGİ | HAZİRAN 2013 19
