with infantile esotropia had delayed motor and mental development compared with<br />

healthy children. After strabismus surgery, the children recovered mentally, but their<br />

motor delays persisted for months on testing with the Bayley scales. <strong>The</strong> results<br />

of this study demonstrate that early strabismus surgery (before two years of age) for<br />

children with infantile esotropia is beneficial for early brain development.<br />
