Probably American, ca.1800, printed<br />
cotton. Andrew Ellicott’s revision of<br />
L’Enfant plan for the nation’s capital<br />
including his notes. Similar to Ellicott’s<br />
1792 engraving of same. In a gilt frame,<br />
26 1/4”h. 28 3/4”w.<br />

England, 1760-1775, mahogany. Good<br />
detail with cabriole legs with acanthus<br />
carving, gadrooned seat frame, pierced<br />
splat and shaped crest with carved scroll<br />
and feather design. Slip seats reupholstered<br />
in gold floral brocade. 38 3/4”h.<br />
These chairs represent the prototype for<br />
similar chairs made in Massachusetts in<br />
the 1790s. See Downs, American Furniture:<br />
Queen and Chippendale Periods,<br />
figures 153 and 154, and also Kirk,<br />
American Furniture in the British<br />
Tradition to 1830, figure 891. Similar<br />
splats were also used in New York,<br />
Rhode Island, and Philadelphia.<br />
