Martha Hughes Sibley, probably New Jersey, 1828, silk<br />
on linen. Patriotic inscription “...did this work in the 9th<br />
year of her age 1828 being the fifty-second year of<br />
independence of the United States” as well as alphabets,<br />
floral baskets and strawberry vine border. In a frame,<br />
19 1/2”h. 15 1/2”w.<br />
Martha Hughes Sibley was born September 7, 1819, to<br />
John Sibley (1772-1831) and Sarah Brooks Sibley. Born<br />
in Cumberland County, New Jersey, where her parents<br />
were married in 1798. Martha married James Madison<br />
Mulliken (born 1800, Maryland) in Putnam County,<br />
Indiana, where they raised three children.<br />

Newville, Richland County, Ohio, is another possibility,<br />
although the town was not plotted until 1823.<br />
