VIRGINIA BARE
February 18, 1925 – June 11, 2011
It's no wonder Virginia Bare considered red
her signature color. After all, red is the color of love,
and Virginia loved deeply: her family, her friends, her
antiques, and her houses. Over 50 years, Virginia
traveled throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and New
England, often with her dear friend, Sam Forsythe
or beloved daughter, Julie, seeking old and beautiful
objects to sell in her shop or enjoy in her home.
She read voraciously and became a trusted and
knowledgeable resource on everything from redware
to glass to furniture. Passionate and tireless in her
dedication to the things she loved, Virginia always
had time for one more joke, one more great find,
and one more old house that needed to be restored.
She is remembered as the epitome of class and
integrity and her easy laugh and warm smile will
be missed by those who loved and admired her.
WILLIAM R. DENNISON, JR.
January 31, 1918 – February 4, 2011
Bill Dennison bought his first antique in the
early 1950's when he saw through a white
painted surface to the beautiful form of a
cherry one-drawer stand. The thrill of that find
would drive a passion for form and craftsmanship
that spanned more than 60 years. With his wife,
Catherine, Bill scoured shows, shops and auctions
throughout western Pennsylvania and Ohio – keeping
company with some of the best known dealers
and collectors in the 1970's. His military and law
backgrounds instilled an appreciation and drive for
scholarship; and he educated himself by reading
hundreds of books on antiques and art. But the true
drive behind his buying decisions was the old adage,
“buy what makes you smile.”
Virginia Bare and Bill Dennison attended many auctions in the barn at Garth's
over the past 50 years. Some of the items they purchased in this saleroom are
coming back across the block now....like old friends, we are happy to see them
again. We appreciate our shared history, and their family's trust in Garth's. Garth's
team is privileged to represent their collections in this auction.
