PROFESSIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE Caring Estate Planning Professionals Honor their Own at Mitzvah Society Reception Local estate planning professionals committed to philanthropic giving and the future of the Jewish community came together on March 19, 2013 at St. Andrews Country Club for the Professional Advisory Committee’s (PAC) 9th Annual Mitzvah Society Cocktail Reception. They paid tribute to their own Richard Steinberg as this year’s Mitzvah Society honoree. PAC Chair Marjorie Horwin also inducted Eliot Popper, the newest and 56th Mitzvah Society member. This year’s “repeat Mitzvah Society members” Elyssa Kupferberg, Mark Schaum, Rich Steinberg, Adam Bankier, Tom Kaplan and Dan Levine were also recognized for their continued successes in fulfilling the philanthropic wishes of their clients on behalf of our community. PROFILE IN GIVING: Richard Steinberg, 2013 Mitzvah Society Honoree At its annual Mitzvah Society reception, the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) honored Richard Steinberg for his exemplary service and leadership. Professionally, Steinberg is President and Chief Investment Officer of Steinberg Global Asset Management, and a frequent guest on CNBC’s Squawk Box and PBS’ Nightly Business Report. As a volunteer, he’s an active PAC member, was Vice Chair of JJCF and chaired its Investment Committee, has been Vice Chair of corporate sponsorships, twice co-chaired Super Sunday, and is a recipient of the Federation’s James and Margie Baer Young Leadership Award. And he’s now the incoming JJCF Chair. “Rich is a great leader, friend and confidant, with an incredibly strong passion for our Jewish Federation, our Jewish heritage and Israel,” said David Pratt, outgoing Chair of JJCF. “With Rich’s incredible talent and vision, the JJCF is poised to continue growing by leaps and bounds.” • What inspired you to become involved with Jewish philanthropy? When we first moved here, my wife, Naomi, became very involved in Federation. We wanted to feel part of the community and teach our kids that not everyone lives “La Vida Boca.” Steinberg Global was a young company and my attention needed to be on the firm. When Naomi started her business, our volunteer roles began to switch. The community’s investment in both of us through leadership development, mission experiences and more has been instrumental to our continued, deepening engagement here. • What principles guide your approach to philanthropy? My main principle is you need to give until it helps. My second principle is to connect clients with projects that they are passionate about and connect those links. My last principle is that primarily only Jews give to Jewish causes. There are certainly exceptions, but the gift is different than giving to a museum or performing arts charity. • As the incoming Chair of the Foundation, what are your goals – and what do you see as the biggest challenges? My primary goal is to build our unrestricted endowment. That is the lifeblood of our ability to help the community in the future. It is our primary goal and our primary challenge. I just want to build on the amazing job that David Pratt has done. He has given me a roadmap for the future prosperity of the Foundation. I also want the Jewish community at large to understand that the Foundation is there for everyone. At the same time, we need to build their awareness of the importance of investing in the future of our community and our people through the JJCF. • What is something about you that might surprise people? People may be surprised that, despite my bravado, I am actually a softy inside. On a recent mission to Cuba with other leaders from the Jewish Federation, I cried like a baby as we discussed ways to leave a lasting imprint on the Jewish Community there. It wasn’t the first time this has happened, and I am sure it won’t be the last! 39 CHAILIFE
