Jewish community relations council/Jewish Education JCRC Hears Florida Session Wrap-up Our Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council met on May 8 to review the Florida Legislative session. Bernie Friedman, Esq., longtime lobbyist for Florida’s Association of Jewish Federations, reported on areas of concern to the Federation, its beneficiary agencies and the Jewish community. Friedman lauded the JCRC for its success with funding for Federation Transportation Service, Holocaust survivors assistance, adult day care and Kosher meals. He also explained the unanimously passed Holocaust Victims Insurance Act which will allow the State of Florida to pursue insurance companies for policies never paid out during the Holocaust. A recurring $1 million will foster collaborative aerospace research, development and commercialization with Israel’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor. Further, a $100,000 annual allocation will establish an Enterprise Florida office in Tel Aviv for Florida and Israel companies interested in doing business together. Adults Receive Melton “Diplomas” At the height of graduation season, 28 men and women received Certificates of Jewish Studies from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem on May 23, 2013. The 5773 class of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning had completed their two-year curriculum. Together, in weekly classes, they had discovered what it really means to be Jewish through the history, heritage and culture of Judaic tradition in this non-denominational learning opportunity designed for busy adults. The graduates and their guests were welcomed by Rose Weitz, Founding Chair of the Melton International Alumni Association and Chair of the local Melton Advisory Board. Weitz also read a poem by Florence Melton, whose vision and philanthropy, together with The Hebrew University, developed the widespread international program. Marion Hirschman and Rabbi David Steinhardt, members of the dynamic, scholarly local Melton faculty, addressed the group and presented the certificates with pride and affection. PJ Library Supporters & Partners Celebrate at Cocktail Reception Excited about the forthcoming launch of PJ Library® in our community, project supporters and partner representatives gathered for a cocktail reception at the beautiful home of Ilene & Peter Wohlgemuth on February 27. The guests included PJ donors, local rabbis and board members from PJ Library affiliated synagogues. The guests heard from Ilene Wohlgemuth, local PJ Library Chair; Toby and Leon Cooperman, project supporters; and partner representatives Kathy Elias (USCJ), Rabbi Dan Freelander (URJ), and Matthew C.
