JEWISH WOMEN’S FOUNDATION JWF GRANTS WISHES, CELEBRATES 10 YEARS HONORING ROXANE LIPTON WITH DELIGHTFUL DISHES BY CHEF MICHELLE BERNSTEIN Hands-on philanthropists of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of South Palm Beach County (JWF) and guests gathered at Boca Rio Country Club on March 6 for the 2013 Granting Wishes Reception. They celebrated JWF’s tenth anniversary, as JWF announced their 2013 grants and honored their founder Roxane Frechie Lipton. Over the past ten years, our JWF has allocated more than $560,000 to organizations that improve the lives of Jewish women and children. This total includes the new 2013 grants of $121,060. hors d’oeuvres, food stations, desserts, wine and soft drinks, was chaired by Linda Brodie and Mady Friedman. Roxane was lauded by Matthew C. Levin, the Federation’s President & CEO; by Mara Reuben, JWF Chair; and by Sheila Fuente, past JWF Chair. The JWF Trustees, who pool their philanthropic resources and together select how to direct them, made a donation to the JWF in Roxane’s honor. Chef Michelle Bernstein was introduced by Alice Kemper, JWF Membership Chair. The nearly 175 women also enjoyed a vivacious presentation and cooking demonstration by Chef, restaurateur and community activist Michelle Bernstein. The evening, which included an abundant array of festive Representatives from event sponsors joined in the celebration, including: Tammy Gleason and Duane Smith of Toshiba Business Solutions; and Linda Behmoiras of The Boca Raton Observer. JWF – Making a Difference for Jewish Women and Girls around the Corner and in Israel In 2012, the Jewish Women’s Foundation of South Palm Beach County allocated $107,250 to seven Israeli and local projects personally selected by the JWF trustees. Here’s how three of those programs have been changing lives for a variety of Jewish women and girls through the vision and generosity of this Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation initiative: SAVVY – Adolph & Rose Levis JCC SAVVY has offered workshops to enable young local Jewish women and teen girls with special needs to learn self defense, and build skills to strengthen their physical and emotional health. Two sessions totaling 30 classes were based on a structured curriculum incorporating Jewish values. The women and girls learned to protect themselves physically, and by working with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. In the process, they developed confidence to consider new possibilities in self development with peers, family, classmates, work and fitness. Empowerment Program for Teenage Girls at Risk – Ethiopian National Project JWF has also been changing teenage girls’ lives through the Girls Empowerment Program at the Ethiopian National Project’s Youth Outreach Center in our Sister City, Kiryat Bialik. From meeting with inspirational female role models to exploring the many issues facing them as adolescent and immigrant girls, the project is creating a cadre of future young Ethiopian-Israeli women leaders motivated to succeed and fully integrate into Israeli society. Young Women for Future Leadership Training – WePower This leadership development program has been preparing women activists between the ages of 25 and 55, who possess a sense of mission and a desire to create and lead social change. The program features 10 bi-weekly four-hour sessions, moderated by a professional group leader. Together, the women develop leadership skills, learning about Leadership, Politics and Gender Issues; Analyzing the Local Political/Public Environment; Setting & Reaching Personal Goals; and Learning from Role Models/Networking with local women leaders and government officials. LOCAL JEWISH WOMEN’S FOUNDATION GRANT FUNDING 2013 Total Allocation: $121,060 iPads for Autism - Jewish Federation of SPBC, Special Needs Department Lending library, educator training and technical support for Jewish women and children on the spectrum PJ Library - Jewish Federation of SPBC Jewish children’s literature and music mailed monthly to Jewish homes free of charge Let’s Get Healthy - Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service Nutritional counseling for women clients of the Jacobson Family Food Pantry ISRAEL Empowering At Risk Women for College Completion The American Committee for Shenkar College in Israel Tutors/mentors to help students from disadvantaged and immigrant backgrounds complete college Cracking the Glass Ceiling – Promoting Young Women to Science - Kol Israel Haverim Help for at-risk-young women to build self-esteem and empowerment, and excel in science studies Enabling Disadvantaged Women to Break Out of the Cycle of Poverty through Access to Technology - Machshava Tova Opportunities for underprivileged women to acquire computer skills toward better jobs and a fuller life Developing Women’s Leadership in the Municipal Arena - WePower Preparation for increasing numbers of women to run for and be elected to city council and mayoral positions Bringing Women to the Fore: A Feminist Partnership – Itach-Maaki (National Collaborative Grant in Israel) Our JWF is one of 17 groups each making two-year allocations to a cooperative effort of 8 leading Israeli women’s organizations Rapid Response Overview JWF also maintains a Rapid Response Fund that provides one-time urgent assistance with health, housing, respite care or child care for single Jewish working mothers in our own community. 43 CHAILIFE
