7.1.6 Alwar<br />
The district is situated in north east <strong>of</strong> Rajasthan between 27° 04' <strong>and</strong> 28° 04' North latitudes <strong>and</strong> 76° 07’ <strong>and</strong><br />
77° 13' East longitudes covering a geographical Area is about 8380 sq. km. The climate <strong>of</strong> the district is very<br />
hot in summer <strong>and</strong> very cold in winter. The maximum temperature <strong>of</strong> the district has been 47°C. Two<br />
seasonal rivers <strong>of</strong> the district are Ruparel <strong>and</strong> the Sabi.<br />
In all 1200 wetl<strong>and</strong>s are mapped including 1070 small wetl<strong>and</strong>s (< 2.25 ha) with 12774 ha area. Rivers/<br />
streams with 7066 ha. contributed 55.32% to the total wetl<strong>and</strong> area. The tanks/ponds with 2891 ha (22.63%<br />
area) is the second major wetl<strong>and</strong> category, followed by reservoir/barrages with 949 ha area i.e. 7.43 %.<br />
Thus, the district is dominated by man-made wetl<strong>and</strong>s mainly comprised <strong>of</strong> tanks/ponds<br />
Open water spread <strong>of</strong> the wetl<strong>and</strong>s is significantly higher in Post-monsoon (3192 ha) than Pre-monsoon (747<br />
ha) season. Aquatic vegetation is during Post-monsoon (16 ha) . The qualitative turbidity <strong>of</strong> water is low in<br />
both the seasons. Details <strong>of</strong> estimates <strong>of</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong>s in Alwar are given in Table 11.<br />
