7.1.12 Jaipur<br />
Jaipur is one <strong>of</strong> the advanced districts <strong>of</strong> Rajasthan located in the eastern part <strong>of</strong> the state. It is the capital city<br />
<strong>of</strong> Rajasthan <strong>and</strong> is also known by the name <strong>of</strong> “Pink City” owing to its beautifully constructed palaces, havelis<br />
<strong>and</strong> forts. The central co-ordinates <strong>of</strong> the Jaipur district is 26.55° North latitude <strong>and</strong> 75.52° East longitude.<br />
The city is located at 431 meters altitude from mean sea level. Jaipur district bounded in the North by Sikar.<br />
It is touches with Tonk in the South <strong>and</strong> in the East by Alwar, Dausa, Sawai Madhopur. The district is<br />
covered by Nagaur In the West <strong>and</strong> Ajmer district. The geographical area <strong>of</strong> the district is 11152 sq. km.<br />
The maximum temperature during summer reaches 45 0 whereas the minimum temperature during winter<br />
goes down to 5 0 C. Jaipur district is very much important from tourism point <strong>of</strong> view <strong>and</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
extensively visited places in the country.<br />
Total 1484 wetl<strong>and</strong>s are mapped including 1054 small wetl<strong>and</strong>s (< 2.25 ha) with 41352 ha area. The Rivers/<br />
streams with 23598 ha. contributed 57.07% to the total wetl<strong>and</strong> area. The Tanks/Ponds with 3774 ha (9.13%<br />
area) is the second major wetl<strong>and</strong> category, followed by Reservoirs/Barrages with 2926 ha area i.e. 7.08 %.<br />
Thus, the district is dominated by man-made wetl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />
Open water spread <strong>of</strong> the wetl<strong>and</strong>s is significantly higher in post monsoon (10854 ha) than during pre<br />
monsoon (8673 ha), indicating the rainfall dependence <strong>of</strong> the wetl<strong>and</strong>s in the state. Aquatic vegetation is<br />
higher in post monsoon (82 ha).The qualitative turbidity <strong>of</strong> water is moderate in post monsoon <strong>and</strong> high in<br />
pre monsoon period .Details <strong>of</strong> estimates <strong>of</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong>s in Jaipur are given in Table 17.<br />
