7.1.9 Karauli<br />

Karauli district is bordered by Dholpur District to the east; by Bharatpur District to the north-east; by Dausa<br />

District to the north; <strong>and</strong> by Sawai Madhopur District to the west. The geographical area <strong>of</strong> the district is 5530<br />

sq. Km. The worth visiting place <strong>of</strong> the district is Kela Devi Wild Life Sanctuary. The maximum temperature<br />

touches 49 0 whereas the minimum temperature 2 0 C.<br />

Total 916 wetl<strong>and</strong>s are mapped including 763 small wetl<strong>and</strong>s (< 2.25 ha) with 10042 ha area. Rivers/ streams<br />

with 6270 ha. contributed 62.44% to the total wetl<strong>and</strong> area. The Tanks/Ponds with 1679 ha (16.72% area) is<br />

the second major wetl<strong>and</strong> category, followed by Reservoirs/Barrages with 1231 ha area i.e. 12.26 %. Thus,<br />

the district is dominated by man-made wetl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Open water spread <strong>of</strong> the wetl<strong>and</strong>s is significantly higher in Post-monsoon (4384 ha) than during Premonsoon<br />

(2457 ha). Aquatic vegetation is higher during pre monsoon (59 ha). The qualitative turbidity <strong>of</strong><br />

water is low in both the seasons. Details <strong>of</strong> estimates <strong>of</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong>s in Karauli are given in Table 14.<br />
