maybe the man will telephone his lover<br />
maybe he'll let it ride<br />
after all, he'll see her<br />
when he gets back into town<br />
and the snow's not too bad after all<br />
and the lover<br />
waiting in a warm house<br />
with cats, yes let's say cats<br />
will after all go to sleep<br />
we're all adults here<br />
so there's no story really, no stormy<br />
'phone call, winds whistling<br />
around the 'phone booth<br />
or frost coming between them, no heat<br />
to warm one's sleeping and the other's driving<br />
no moral to the story<br />
and no difficult dreams to settle<br />
lovers think in the night <strong>of</strong> each other<br />
at home or on the road<br />
and probably are sensible<br />
about the telephone bill<br />
or,<br />
maybe not<br />
sometimes that happens too<br />
it's never possible<br />
to predict these things<br />
reliably, at midnight, in winter<br />
when roads are long and beds are cold.
