English consonants: /t∫/ - /dE/<br />

Consonant sounds /t∫/ and /dE/<br />

The sound /t∫/ is usually spelt ch: cheap, rich or much. But we also find other spellings: tch: watch or<br />

church; t: nature or picture; st: question.<br />

The sound /dE/ is spelt: g or j at the beginning of a word: join, gin, or jam. And it is spelt dge in the middle<br />

or at the end of a word: ridge, edge.<br />

Note the difference between /t∫/ (rich) and /dE/ (ridge)<br />
