● We form the past simple of regular verbs by adding the suffix -ed to the infinitive. The form is the<br />

same for all the persons:<br />

I watched TV last night<br />

He watched a film last Saturday<br />

● Negative forms use DID + NOT (DIDN'T) + the infinitive of the verb:<br />

I didn't close the door<br />

(NOT I didn't closed the door)<br />

She didn't watch TV last night<br />

(NOT She didn't watched TV)<br />

● Interrogative forms use DID + Subject + the infinitive of the verb:<br />

Did they open the book?<br />

Did you finish the exam?<br />

– In short answers, we only repeat the auxiliary verb did:<br />

Did you walk to school yesterday?<br />

Yes, I did / No, I didn't<br />

(NOT Did they opened the book?)<br />

(NOT Did you finished the exam?)<br />

The Past Simple is used:<br />

• to describe completed actions<br />

• to describe situations in the past<br />
