FOUNDATION DONATIONS<br />

The <strong>Carolina</strong> <strong>Hurricanes</strong> Kids ‘N Community Foundation strives to meet the educational, social, cultural and health-related needs of our <strong>com</strong>munity by offering unique<br />

resources and financial support to local youth-oriented organizations. Since its inception in 1997, the Kids ‘N Community Foundation has donated over $9.5 million in cash<br />

and in-kind services.<br />

during the 2010-11 season, the Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated $539,711 in cash to 71 different North <strong>Carolina</strong> children’s charities and foundations. each<br />

donation is required to meet the needs of local youth in the areas of health, education and underserved population development. Specification of how the funds will be<br />

used and periodic updates on the progress of the programs are required for each agency. The money was donated during the Kids ‘N Community Foundation’s two grant<br />

cycles, once during the fall and once during the spring.<br />

FOUNDATION FUNDRAISERS<br />

Throughout the year, the Kids ‘N Community Foundation raises funds through various events and auctions. The three major fundraisers are the Golf Tournament,<br />

Skate with the Canes and Casino Night and Wine Tasting. These three events <strong>com</strong>bined raised $376,000 for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation during the 2010-11<br />

season. all three events featured the entire <strong>Hurricanes</strong> team, coaching staff, broadcasters and front office executives.<br />

every home game features a game-night, silent auction showcasing autographed jerseys, equipment, photos and much more. The game-night auctions<br />

raised $151,551 in 2010-11. in addition, online auctions generated more than $31,000.<br />

Other fundraisers during the regular season included the Points for Kids program, the Paper/Magnetic Hearts campaign, the We Love the <strong>Hurricanes</strong> Luncheon,<br />

the Valentine’s day Mystery Cane T-Shirt Fundraiser and St. Patrick’s day-themed puck sales.<br />

COMMUNITY INITIATIVES<br />

PICK UP A BOOK AND READ<br />

The Pick up a Book and Read program, which gives third, fourth and fifth grade students incentives to read, had a resoundingly successful year. Record numbers of<br />

participating students, classrooms and schools read a <strong>com</strong>bined total of more than 3.9 million pages. The schools that produced the most pages read received special<br />

assemblies with Stormy, and the top three schools in 2010-11 were deep River elementary School, Wilburn Year-Round elementary School and aurelian Springs elementary<br />

School. Pick up a Book and Read also continued the optional essay contest. all 20 essay finalists came to the RBC Center along with their parents and teachers for a recognition<br />

lunch, which featured Chuck Kaiton as the keynote speaker along with Stormy and Joe Corvo.<br />

<strong>NHL</strong> DIVERSITY TEAM<br />

The Capital City Crew <strong>com</strong>pleted its second full season as part of the <strong>NHL</strong> Hockey is for everyone program. Thanks to grants from the Kids ‘N Community<br />

Foundation, the <strong>NHL</strong>Pa Goals and dreams Foundation, the <strong>NHL</strong> Foundation, RBC Bank, and equipment donations from eric Staal, the Crew provides the full hockey<br />

experience at no cost to participants. The roster is made up of 42 kids ages 8-14 from local Boys and Girls Clubs. The season consisted of 15 on-ice sessions which<br />

included practices, scrimmages and eight sessions of the life skills program. The season wrapped up with an awards lunch hosted by the <strong>Carolina</strong> ale House where<br />

Troy Bodie was on hand to present trophies and take pictures with the players.<br />

MARBLES KIDS MUSEUM<br />

The Kids ‘N Community Foundation provided a grant to Marbles Kids Museum to keep the “Center ice” exhibit open. in addition to the synthetic ice rink and a replica<br />

<strong>Hurricanes</strong> locker room that highlight the exhibit, a health food station featuring <strong>Hurricanes</strong> players was added to provide interactive insight into healthy eating habits.<br />

CAROLINA HURRICANES PLAYROOM AT REX HOSPITAL<br />

Through a grant provided by the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, the <strong>Carolina</strong> <strong>Hurricanes</strong> help provide solace for children and their families in the pediatric wing<br />

of Rex Hospital. The room is equipped with a Wii, <strong>com</strong>puter station, reading corner, fish tank, art station and interactive learning videos.<br />

TICKET PROGRAMS<br />

HURRICANES HEROES<br />

<strong>Hurricanes</strong> Heroes is a program where tickets are donated to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation by local businesses and season ticket holders. The tickets are then<br />

distributed by the Kids ‘N Community Foundation to local children’s charities and organizations at no cost. Nearly 1,000 tickets were donated to non-profit organizations<br />

in our <strong>com</strong>munity during the 2010-11 season.<br />

HOLIDAY TICKET SPECIAL NIGHTS<br />

The <strong>Hurricanes</strong> held several special holiday donation events, allowing fans to receive buy-one-get-one vouchers in exchange for donations to help those in need<br />

during the holiday season. in 2010-11, the events included a food drive for the Food Bank of Central and eastern North <strong>Carolina</strong> and interFaith Food Shuttle, a toy drive for<br />

Toys for Tots, Wake County Human Services, interact of Wake County, and Helping Hands Mission, and a military assist drive to benefit military personnel through the<br />

uSO of North <strong>Carolina</strong>.
