period before <strong>Carolina</strong> responded with a goal with one minute remaining in the period<br />

and two scores in the third to end up with a 3-3 tie. Nelson Emerson scored the gametying<br />

goal with 5:24 left in the third period.<br />

NoVeMBeR 5, 1998 (at nY IsLanders) — After allowing three goals in the first 11:59<br />

of the game, <strong>Carolina</strong> scored in the first and second periods to close the gap to 3-2<br />

entering the third period. <strong>Carolina</strong> tallied three goals (Jeff O’Neill, Martin Gelinas and<br />

Kent Manderville) in a 3:20 span early in the third period for a 6-3 victory.<br />

second period, <strong>Carolina</strong> was in a 5-2 hole with 11:51 remaining. Ron Francis and Jeff<br />

O’Neill tallied goals in a 5:57 span to close the deficit to one. Martin Gelinas notched the<br />

game-tying goal with 1:34 remaining in the third period to tie the game 5-5.<br />

JaNuaRy 7, 2000 (at caroLIna) — After trailing 4-0 to Anaheim midway through<br />

the second period, Andrei Kovalenko scored at the 17:34 mark of the second period.<br />

Jeff O’Neill scored twice and Glen Wesley added another in the third period to tie the<br />

*May 9, 2002 (at MontreaL) — In Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals,<br />

<strong>Carolina</strong> trailed Montreal 3-0 heading into the third period. Sean Hill scored a power<br />

play goal at 3:57 of the third period and Bates Battaglia cut the lead to one at <strong>12</strong>:43.<br />

Erik Cole tied the game with 41 seconds left in regulation with <strong>Carolina</strong> skating with an<br />

extra attacker. Then, defenseman Niclas Wallin won it with a shot from the right point<br />

at 3:14 of the overtime period to give <strong>Carolina</strong> the momentum and propel the <strong>Hurricanes</strong><br />

to the series victory in six games.<br />

*JuNe 5, 2006 (at caroLIna) — In Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, <strong>Carolina</strong> trailed<br />

Edmonton 3-0 before Rod Brind’Amour put the <strong>Hurricanes</strong> on the board with 2:43<br />

remaining in the second period. Ray Whitney opened the third period with an evenstrength<br />

broke up Alex Auld’s shutout bid 1:40 into the third frame. Subsequently, Erik Cole (3:06),<br />

Scott Walker (8:02), Cory Stillman (9:35) and Craig Adams (10:02) <strong>com</strong>bined for four<br />

more goals in the 9:22 following LaRose’s tally to give <strong>Carolina</strong> a 5-3 lead. Olli Jokinen<br />

made the game 5-4 with 56 seconds remaining in regulation, but former Panthers winger<br />

Ray Whitney iced the 6-4 win for <strong>Carolina</strong> with just 13 seconds to play.<br />

aPRIL 7, 2007 (at caroLIna) — In the final game of the season, <strong>Carolina</strong> trailed Florida<br />

4-1, <strong>12</strong>:14 into the second period with David Tanabe’s goal at 5:46 of the second the<br />

lone high point for the home team. Then, 5:31 into the third period, Tanabe again scored<br />

to bring the <strong>Hurricanes</strong> to within two goals. At the <strong>12</strong>:13 mark of the third, Erik Cole<br />

scored to make it 4-3, followed by Eric Staal who tied the game with just 4:23 remaining<br />

in regulation. John Grahame stopped Bryan Allen’s penalty shot 2:37 into overtime,<br />

and Rod Brind’Amour sent the <strong>Hurricanes</strong> into the offseason with a win when he beat<br />

netminder Craig Anderson with 24 seconds left in the extra frame.<br />

ocToBeR 11, 2008 (at taMPa BaY) — In just the second game of the regular season,<br />

<strong>Carolina</strong> trailed 3-0 late in the second period. Rod Brind’Amour got the <strong>Hurricanes</strong>’ rally<br />

started with less than one minute remaining in the second frame, and Matt Cullen used<br />

a power-play goal 1:56 into the third to cut the Lightning lead to one. Eric Staal tied the<br />

game 3-3 with 10:04 remaining in regulation. The <strong>Hurricanes</strong> peppered goaltender Mike<br />

Smith with five shots in the overtime period, the last <strong>com</strong>ing when Staal notched his<br />

second of the game with 24 seconds remaining. It marked just the second three-goal<br />

<strong>com</strong>eback for <strong>Carolina</strong> since the team’s relocation in 1997.<br />

*aPRIL 28, 2009 (at neW JerseY) — THE SHOCK AT THE ROCK: <strong>Carolina</strong> trailed New<br />

Jersey 3-2 with 1:20 remaining in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at<br />

the Prudential Center when Jussi Jokinen one-timed a pass from Joni Pitkanen to tie<br />

the game. Eric Staal then notched the game-winner when he fired a shot under Martin<br />

Brodeur’s right shoulder with 32 seconds remaining. Staal’s goal marked the latest<br />

game-winning goal in the third period of a Game 7 in Stanley Cup playoffs history, and<br />

Jokinen’s and Staal’s goals in the final 1:20 also marked the latest in a Game 7 that a<br />

team trailed in regulation and came back to win.<br />
