the box spot-on. Only the Jet<br />

required a bit ofrweaking to get the<br />

blade parallel to the miter gauge slots,<br />

and the DeWalt fence needed a bit<br />

offine tuning to bring it in line. Both<br />

issues were corrected in short order.<br />

Next on the list was measuring<br />

the tabletops for flatness. Ifa top isnt<br />

flat, you'll have a bear of a time<br />

making accurate cuts.<br />

Once again, I was pleased to find<br />

that most tops were indeed dead flat.<br />

The General International, however,<br />

showed a slight dish (.03") on my<br />

first measurement (Photo, page 76).<br />

This turned out to be the result of<br />

the cast-iron extension wings being<br />

tipped up slighdy at their outside<br />

edges. I was able to remedy the<br />

problem by placing shims between<br />

the wings and the saw table. (I used<br />

small pieces of dado blade shims for<br />

this.) After about 10 minutes of fiddling<br />

with it, I was able to bring the<br />

extension w'ings into the same plane<br />

as the main table.<br />

After tabletops came the arbors.<br />

A wobbly arbor will result in rough<br />

cuts, lost horsepower, and undue<br />

wear on a blade. I measured for<br />

runout with a dial indicator and a<br />

calibration disc (Photo, ngftt). None<br />

of the saws exceeded .005" of<br />

runout, which is well within acceptable<br />

range. The Craftsman and<br />

DeWalt saws turned out to be particularly<br />

steady, with each showing<br />

only .003" of runout.<br />
