2. Brief History of Service The Connexions program was developed in 1996 as a response to<br />
the multiple and complex needs of marginalised young people who<br />
experience problems relating to dual diagnoses of mental health<br />
and substance use problems.<br />

Organisation<br />
Connexions<br />
Connexions provides office based counselling and assertive<br />
outreach case management services. This involves the provision of<br />
therapeutic interventions, information, advocacy and referral.<br />
Connexions staff adopt a holistic treatment approach and address<br />
issues relating to mental health and substance use including<br />
homelessness. Connexions have nomination rights for three<br />
transitional properties located in the City of Yarra and City of<br />
Darebin.<br />
Gateway<br />
Founded in 2000, Gateway provides pathways to education,<br />
training and employment for disadvantaged young people with<br />
complex problems between the ages of 15 - 28. Gateway is a longterm<br />
program where young people can learn skills, be given the<br />
opportunity to use those skills in a way recognised and valued by<br />
the community, and explore an area of employment and training<br />
they are interested in. To achieve this takes time. We begin by<br />
providing a safe place where young people can try out different<br />
activities, have a taste of success and develop a sense of<br />
achievement. Staff are optimistic, recognising strengths and<br />
challenging program participants to explore and recognise their<br />
