Gerdau I+D Europa is <strong>the</strong> Research Company <strong>of</strong> Gerdau Special Steel Europe, which is <strong>the</strong> main Spanish<br />
special steel producer (capacity 1.000.000 tonnes/year). Gerdau I+D Europa is a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it subsidiary<br />
company <strong>of</strong> Gerdau dedicated to <strong>the</strong> Research and Development <strong>of</strong> products and processes in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong>:<br />

Steel Castings and Forgings<br />
It has forty-six employees; most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m research engineers and scientists devoted to research divided in<br />
four departments (Steelmaking-CC, Rolling, Product and Laboratory) and has its own Research Laboratory,<br />
which is equipped with modern test facilities. The Centre has extensive experience <strong>of</strong> carrying out former<br />
ECSC and present RFCS projects over a number <strong>of</strong> years, and currently <strong>the</strong>re are about 22 projects under<br />
study.<br />
Gerdau I+D Europa has access to production plants to carry out <strong>the</strong> required experimental work and to<br />
obtain <strong>the</strong> required process data with wide experience in investigations on <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> steelmaking, casting,<br />
rolling and finishing.<br />
Main capacities in <strong>nanotechnology</strong> / nanoscience<br />
-Capacity <strong>of</strong> working with nanoparticles (TiO 2, CeO 2) in microalloyed and carburizing steels in experimental<br />
scale.<br />
-Development <strong>of</strong> new steel grades with improved mechanical properties by <strong>the</strong> addition <strong>of</strong> nanoparticles<br />
-Development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> appropriate addition technique during casting for nanoparticle dispersion in <strong>the</strong> steel.<br />
