“Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is
born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.”
—Luke 2:10
November is filled with many opportunities to experience joy. The month opens with All Saints Day. We
pause to remember faithful family members, friends, and spiritual leaders who have gone before us. We reflect
on those who shared their faith, guided our early steps toward God, and encouraged our spiritual growth.
Thanksgiving Day serves as a reminder that gratitude for all God’s gifts is appropriate everywhere, every day,
and in every season. As the month comes to a close, we move into the season of Advent.
The seasons of the Christian year follow the life of Jesus, beginning with joyful preparation for his birth
during Advent—a word from Latin meaning “to come.” This season calls us to worship both privately and in
community. Prophetic Scriptures and inspiring music enhance our observance of these days of preparation and
anticipation. Advent reminds us that Jesus came, is with us, and will come again. We realize once again that
God gives us another chance as God’s dream is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. We sing, “Joy to the world, the Lord is
come!”
This month, reflect on the people in your life who have nurtured your faith. Write a letter of thanksgiving
to God, naming those you remember and noting how they encouraged you in your spiritual journey. Choose one
or two who are living and write them a note of gratitude and appreciation.
