A new year brings a season of growth. In the cold,
dark winter months, nature appears to be sleeping.
Actually new life is developing, preparing to burst
forth in glorious profusion as spring arrives. We
experience similar periods of growth in our spiritual
lives. Times of silence and solitude—even times of
darkness and pain—deepen our relationship with
God, renew our commitment to God’s dream, and
prepare us for ministry.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we are
works in progress. The Holy Spirit brings about
transformation as we make ourselves available
through spiritual practices. We are formed in
Christ’s image as we worship, practice the
disciplines of the Christian faith, and engage in
ministry and mission experiences.
Faith is awakened, supported, and
challenged in relationships readily available in
congregational life. Every part of congregational
life is an opportunity for faith formation: Bible
study, worship, ministry opportunities, mission
groups, choir rehearsals, small-group meetings—
even committee meetings! As individuals learn and
grow in faith, congregations are transformed and
communities are changed. God’s dream becomes
reality through the church, the body of Christ.
These months begin in the darkness of winter and
end with resurrection and new growth.
