Jesus said of his first followers: “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly” (John 10:10 KJV). Long before December, we are bombarded with society’s idea of Christmas
with marketing and consumerism grabbing our attention everywhere we turn. At this season many confuse
“abundance” with Jesus’ promise of “abundant life.” Contemporary followers of Jesus are challenged to balance
the cultural version of Christmas with the spiritual significance of the birth of Jesus and the abundant life of
hope, peace, joy, and love—the real gifts of Christmas.
As we remember God’s amazing demonstration of love, our hearts are warmed, and generosity is
encouraged. As gifts are given and received, God’s people are reminded that the greatest gift is Jesus. In Jesus,
God’s dream of love and reconciliation continues. We are challenged to live out that dream by following God’s
self-giving example in our relationships with others.
This month, prayerfully consider giving the gift of yourself to someone on the margins of society. Serve
in a homeless shelter. Have a conversation with someone at a soup kitchen. Go to a retirement center and visit
someone who doesn’t get any visitors.
