Oscar Studio Complex
Is Planned in Hawaii
By SYD CA.SSYD
HOLLYWOOD—A five-column feature
spread by Carol Costa which appeared in
Honolulu's Sun Press announced the development
of Oscar Studio City on the island,
with the projected $20,000,000 facility
located in the K.uliou.sou Valley a short distance
from this fast-growing city. Discussing
the project here with Oscar Nichols, president,
and Harry Hope, senior vice-president,
ii was learned that the complex goes beyond
just an ordinary rental facility for TV
and feature production and will include a
tourist and cultural aspect, planned to benefit
the economy of the local merchants,
"It has been Oscar Nichols' brainchild
for the past eight years and it's now under
way," said Hope, outlining the plans.
Nine Acres Purchased
Nichols purchased nine acres of feesimple
land from Financial Consultants.
The property is zoned as residential and
will require a conditional use permit, which
Oscar Studios presently is seeking.
In the artist's projection of the studio,
there will be a fully automated sound stage
with a glass-enclosed visitor's gallery. In
cooperation with local bus companies,
which offer tours of the islands, the studio
will
charge a fee to observe in-progress production.
Hope and Nichols estimate that
there is a potential revenue from this source
which could approximate that of rental
facilities.
William Pereira, architect, whose designs
are famous, has been engaged for the
project, with Frederick K. F. Lee from
Pereira's firm meeting with city authorities
to fit the development into the master
plan for the Kuliousou Valley Park. According
to Nichols, the studio will spend
$700,000 to develop a ten-acre state park
across from the studio. This will be dedicated
to the city.
Automated Sound Stages
Hope disclosed that the sound stages will
be fully automated, once the lighting positions
have been fed into a computer bank,
and are based on a major studio in Japan
utilizing this system. Both executives visited
many studios throughout the world to acquaint
themselves with new technologies
and decided that the Japanese models were
the best, particularly those at the Ryudensha
Studios. NKH of Japan is using these and
may be one of the key rental firms for
the Honolulu complex.
A revolving production fund will be used
for tho.se outside producers who work
through the O.scar Studio to facilitate production.
The company plans four major
feature films per year, plus some TV shows.
Because of the location of the Pacific
island, now being serviced by communications
satellites positioned above the
equator and already serving the area, the
studio could become one of the major
