She succeeds Royce Frith, whose term has expired . . . Hildegard Koblich. who is a member of the local WOMPl Club, will be going back io her home in Germany at month's end. She worked many years for Universal Films in Germany and was employed by United Artists for four and a half years and at Universal for approximately ten and a half years. All told. "Hilly" has been a member of WOMPI for about 14 years and has spent seven years on the executive board. The club here held a dinner in her honor Wednesday (13) at the Rathskellar Restaurant in the Walker House Hotel. Hilly certainly will be missed by her friends at Universal, WOMPI and. indeed, the entire film industry here. Fortunately, however, she vows to attend the upcoming WOMPI International convention in September, which will be held in Charlotte, N.C. Best wishes, Hilly! Star film critic Clyde Gilmour made a particularly savage attack on "Don't Look in the Basement." describing it as "appallingly bad in every way." Gilmour closed his column this way: "Personally. I have never been a militant Canadian nationalist in the matter of film distribution. But if I were a Canadian filmmaker whose latest opus—and the one before that—had been turned down by Canadian exhibitors on the grounds that they just weren't good enough, I'd be hopping mad at the thought that a piece of sloppy American trash as lousy as 'Don't Look in the Basement' can routinely get a CALGARY (Continued Irom preceding page) ing for a discussion session led by Dr. Graham Knox of the department of history. A Lenten series of films is being offered members of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Sunnybrook. Special Lenten worship services long have been a part of the church and this year will be centered around the film presentations, involving children of the congregation as well as adults. Canadians can make bad movies as easily as Americans can (they can and do sometimes make very good ones. too). The Mustang circuit of drive-ins in eastern Ontario has been sold. Details of the transaction have not been released as yet. The WOMPI Club February 25 held its regular general meeting in the screening room of the new Paramount head office here. During the evening many matters were discussed. Among these were plans for the upcoming installation dinner in June, as well as plans to assist the Variety Club of Ontario Tent 28 and the Ass'n for the Mentally Retarded with their endeavors. Through the special kindness of Frank Mancuso, WOMPIs were treated to a screening of Paramount's "Ash Wednesday." The next general meeting will be held in the Variety clubrooms Monday (25). Actress Charlotte Rampllng was a visitor here to promote "Zardoz." which opened locally Friday (15) at the Imperial and the Glendale. "Zardoz" is a futuristic fantasy written and directed by John Boorman. Thanks to the Toronto Theatre Organ Society and the West Toronto Kiwanis Club, the magnificent Wurlitzer formerly in the Shea's Theatre now has been completely rebuilt and installed in this city's famous Casa Loma. Shea's was torn down several years ago to make room for the new city hall, reputed to be one of the world's most beautiful buildings, fronting on the Civic Square. The Bobby Richardson Story" and Through Gates of Splendor." The local newspaper in Medicine Hat is again publicizing its free "Birthday Club." The Medicine Hat News' "Birthday Club" is open to all youngsters from six to ten years of age and includes a free Saturday matinee pass to the Towne Theatre on the child's birthday as well as an invitation to a special Christmas theatre party. It is nice to have Walter DuPerrier back at work after a session of tests in the hospital. Although taking it a bit easy, Walter says he is feeling better every day. The censor board passed two much-discussed films for exhibition in Alberta theatres, "The Exorcist" and "Last Tango in Paris." UA will open "Last Tango in Paris" in the Uptown here and Warner Bros, will u^e the 1.800-seat Palace for the initial engagement of "The Exorcist." "Last Tango" was approved uncut, although with ihc warning: "Extremely coarse language ami frank treatment of adult sexuality may he objectionable." The warning on "The Exorcist" is: "Frightening tale of demonic possession. Extremely coarse language and repulsive sequences may be disturbing." Sex was the theme of a Saturday midnight show at the Towne Cinema, when the double bill offered was "Hot Pants Holiday" and "Batman and Robin" "Baby Love" . . . (chapters 7 anu 8) were shown at the Odeon's weekend midnight show. Supporting the serial was the feature "Concert for Bangladesh." ,'Kt a Sunday matinee, the Odeon showed "Othello." starring Sir Laurence Olivier . NFB Theatre was the place of presentation of the third in a series. "John Huston Retrospective," as shown by the Calgary Film Society. The film The Roots of Heaven" was produced in the U.S. in 1958 and stars Trevor Howard, Errol FIvnn. Eddie Albert and Orson Welles. A rural movie group in southeast British Columbia, the Moyie Community Club, is hoping to build a new clubhouse to serve the residents of the area. Situated some 22 miles south of Cranbrook, Moyie and district has a year-round population of some 200, with double that number in summer. Community activities presently are held in the one-room school and it is proposed that the new center would contain dressing rooms, gymnasium, storerooms and kitchen. The gym would be available for use by the school children and the entire community would reciprocate by using the schoolgrounds during summer vacations. The proposed project is a real community endeavor, with many residents donating time and services. Architect Gerry Browing has drawn up and donated the blueprints for the new center. Ron Brown has donated his services as surveyor. Many other residents have volunteered their labor when construction gets under way. Funds for the center, which is estimated will cost $150,000, will come from various sources. The provincial department of human resources already has donated $500 to the project. Heather Browning, secretary-treasurer, says that by .April members should know whether or not they will be able to go ahead with the building. If the word is "go," then construction very likely will start this spring. January was a very busy month for the Alberta Censor Board. It viewed and classified a total of 41 feature-length pictures in addition to trailers and short subjects. Of the films rated, six were 16mm. In the overall total, six were "family." nine "adult," eight "adult—not suitable for children" and IS were "restricted adult." Bricks Fall From Theatre From Central Edition WEST FRANKFORT. ILL.—The Strand Theatre, shuttered since October 1973. had to be repaired by its owners recently when bricks started falling from the west side of the building. Fred Harkins. fire chief, said he inspected the structure and found that water apparently had seeped between the bricks, loosening them when it froze.
