Following the official ritual, the Denver chapter of the Sons of the Pioneers, a national Laurel and Hardy fan club, kicked oil its membership drive. In a salute to movie mayhem, both past and present, that organization put on a complete demonstration ol silent-movie pie-throwing techniques. Over 300 pies "went down the dram" in the melee! KTLK personality Chuck Evans was present to describe the event in detail for listeners. Herman Hallberg is president and general manager of Wolfberg Theatres, with all circuit units located in or near Denver. Hallberg is embarking on a program of updating and modernizing theatre properties. DENVER John Craig, who had been managing Theatre One. Hardin. Mont., has purchased the property from Mr. and Mrs. Wessel of Billings. Mont. . T. Baird. who operated the Llano Theatre. Plains. Mont., has sold that facility to Wesley Ekstrom. The young man tooling around town in the beautiful new van is Jack Micheletti of J&B Film Distributors. Micheletti claims no credit for the colorful murals which decorate the sides and back of the van, since the art work came as a package with the new vehicle. SALT LAKE CITY J-Terb Schoenhardt, president of Universal Theatre Supply in Salt Lake City, returned from a combination business and vacation trip to Tucson and Scottsdale, Ariz., to attend the TEA Convention. Pat Wareing Watches Over Old Tucson's Wardrobes TUCSON— Mrs. Pat Wareing, wardrobe supervisor at Old Tucson, armed with a Polaroid to make certain that costume colors and patterns coordinate for retakes, "rides herd" on cameramen filming at the local moviemaking and videotaping facility. Her pat cnce was sorely tried during a re- ; cent tacos commercial when sauce from the food had to splash over actors in a scene where they tangle for the last morsel. "Every piece of clothing had to be cleaned through 30 retakes." Mrs. Wareing wailed. However, the thousands of costumes in Old Ti'cson's wardrobe department are cnouah to distract her attention from the "sordid side" of the work. "It's great fun," admitted Mrs. Wareing, who holds degrees in drama, clothing and textiles. "Pumping Iron' Contest CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — The Orson Welles Cinema 3, playing Cinema 5's "Pumping Iron" in auditorium three, lined up a "trivia contest" with Brine's Sporting Goods. Theatre Organ in Church WALTHAM. MASS.—The former Embassy Theatre organ is being installed into the town's Lake View Congregational Church. Indoor Twin Theatre Opens in St. George l| ST. GEORGE, UTAH—A new twin indoor theatre, named simply The Movies, was opened here recently by Westates, Inc., a Salt Lake City-based circuit. The Movies is equipped with Griggs Model 4200 theatre seats. Hurley screen, Christie autowinds and lamphouse, Ballantyne projectors—all furnished and installed by Universal Theatre Supply of Salt Lake City. Situated on a hill overlooking town, The Movies celebrated its completion with an invitational premiere, playing to a packed audience. Tony Rudman and Jim Nicholdemus, owners of the new complex, hosted the premiere gala activities and Harold Chessler, Theatre Candy Co., who is semiretired and now living in Bloomington, served as emcee. The following evening, the theatre was opened to the general public, showing "Airport '77" and "Fun With Dick and Jane." Film by Cine/Design Wins An Award in Competition DENVER—Cine/ Design, a Denver-based film production company, has been awarded second place in an international competition sponsored by the American Ass'n for Conservation Information. The one-hour-long film, "No Other Side of the Mountain." traced efforts during the last 100 years to preserve Colorado's wildlife and the problems of increased population, pollution and technology which have affected wildlife. The motion picture was produced by Jon Husband and Dan Boyd of Cine/ Design, in conjunction with Arch Andrews of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Milwaukee's First X-Con Is Scheduled June 17-20 MILWAUKEE—The first Milwaukee Science-Fiction convention, to be held under the auspices of the Milwaukee Area Science-Fiction and Fantasy Ass'n, is scheduled for the local Red Carpet Inn June 17- 20. Because the conclave will "contain the unknown factor," Philip Taterczynski, association president, said it is to be callec X-Con. X-Con will feature the showing of ok movies such as "Doc Savage, the Man o: Bronze," "Zotz!", "Them" and, "The Da\ the Earth Stood Still." Taterczynski predicts a turnout of nearl; 500 science-fiction buffs.
