10 Water Quality Assessment Report: Middle St. Johns During the next few years, considerable data analysis will be done to establish TMDLs for impaired waters in the Middle St. Johns Basin, establish the initial allocations of pollutant load reductions needed to meet those TMDLs, and produce a Basin Management Action Plan (B-MAP) to reduce the amount of pollutants that cause impairments. These activities depend heavily on the active participation of the water management district, local governments, businesses, and other stakeholders. The Department will work with these organizations and individuals to undertake or continue reductions in the discharge of pollutants and achieve the established TMDLs for impaired waterbodies. Summary of Findings The Middle St. Johns Basin is delineated into 428 waterbodies or segments. Of the total, 104 segments met at least 1 of their designated uses, but another 208 segments either had no data or insufficient data to make a determination of impairment. Overall, the Department’s assessment shows that 58 waterbodies or waterbody segments in the Middle St. Johns Basin are impaired and require the development of TMDLs. Another 58 segments are potentially impaired, but a causative pollutant was not identified or there was insufficient data to meet the verification threshold. Five waterbodies meet the impairment threshold for dissolved oxygen (DO), but not because of a specific pollutant (Category 4b). The following summarizes, by planning unit, impairments by waterbody types and the primary pollutants. Planning units are smaller areas in the basin that provide a more detailed geographic basis for identifying and assessing water quality improvement activities. Alexander Springs Creek Planning Unit Of the 16 waterbody segments in the Alexander Springs Creek planning unit, 5 segments have sufficient data for assessment. Of the assessed segments, none are verified impaired for at least 1 parameter assessed, 1 remains on the Planning List, and 4 meet standards. Waterbodies listed on the Planning List have potential impairments, but need further evaluation. A waterbody listed on the Verified List as impaired for a specific parameter may also be listed on the Planning List for a different parameter(s). The waterbody listed on the Planning List is Buck Lake Fecal and total coliforms Deep Creek Planning Unit Out of the 25 waterbody segments in the Deep Creek planning unit, 8 segments have sufficient data for assessment. Of these, 4 are verified impaired for at least 1 parameter assessed, 2 remain on the Planning List, and 2 meet standards.

A waterbody listed on the Verified List as impaired for a specific parameter may also be listed on the Planning List for a different parameter(s). They include Deep Creek-Lake Ashby Canal Lake Ashby Lake Harney Fecal coliforms, silver, total coliforms Copper Silver DO values for the St. Johns River above Lake Harney and Deep Creek–Lake Ashby Canal are below criterion (Category 4b), but may be the result of natural causes or pollution. Econlockhatchee Planning Unit Of the 58 waterbody segments in the Econlockhatchee planning unit, 33 segments have sufficient data for assessment. Of these, 7 are verified impaired for at least 1 parameter assessed, 9 remain on the Planning List, and 14 meet standards.
