NATIONAL ROADS
Roads Department
Due to the inclement weather conditions (flooding & winter
maintenance) experienced in 2009 and over the winter/
spring period of 2010 expenditure by Offaly County Council
on National Primary/Secondary Road Maintenance were
much greater than in recent years.
Temperatures as low as -10.00 degrees were experienced
across the midlands resulting in sections of the pavement
on national road network breaking out in potholes overnight,
due to frost heave. The repair cost to these sections
of road was estimated at approximately €300,000.
Over the period from the beginning of November 2009 to
the end of February 2010 Offaly County Council had to salt
the roads in excess 60 nights. The cost of this operation
alone is in excess of €500,000. The maintenance allocation
for National Primaries was slightly increased from 2009
and there was a 22% reduction in the National Secondary
allocation. These allocations were not adequate in the
present circumstances, especially in relation to winter
maintenance and salting of roads, to maintain the 140.00
Kms of national roads in the County in a satisfactory condition.

for 2010 were as follows: -
