ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES<br />

While the academic aspects of a college<br />

career usually center around the classroom,<br />

other services, programs, and facilities add<br />

to the learning situation.<br />

SHAPIRO LIBRARY<br />

New Hampshire College is served by the<br />

Shapiro Library, a modern and spacious<br />

building located near the center of the<br />

campus. The constantly expanding collection<br />

contains approximately 55,000 volumes,<br />

3,500 reels of periodicals and newspapers<br />

on microfilm, and 1 5,000 company financial<br />

reports on microfiche. The library receives<br />

over 750 magazines and journals and<br />

subscribes to various business, tax, and<br />

financial services. Collection development is<br />

aimed at providing the highly specialized<br />

research needs of undergraduate and<br />

graduate level business students. Variety in<br />

seating in the form of carrels, open tables,<br />

and lounge areas is provided to afford group<br />

study as well as individualized study. Several<br />

conference rooms are also available for<br />

group projects Professional librarians<br />

provide research assistance and instruction<br />

in the use of library resources.<br />

The library features an art gallery which<br />

offers monthly exhibits of New Hampshire<br />

artists. A separate, but functionally<br />

integrated wing of the library building,<br />

contains a 150 seat studio theatre and the<br />

Audio-Visual section. The latter houses<br />

recordings, video tapes, cassettes, films,<br />

and audio-visual listening carrels. A wide<br />

range of portable A-V equipment is available<br />

for students' and professors' use in classroom<br />

instruction. Original video tapes and<br />

student programs are produced with the<br />

assistance of a professional coordinator of<br />

Audio Visual services. The studio is the<br />

broadcast point for Channel 13, the<br />

College's closed circuit television system.<br />

READING AND COMMUNICATIONS<br />

CENTER<br />

The College maintains a Reading and<br />

Communications Center staffed by two fulltime<br />

faculty members plus additional<br />

tutoring faculty as needed. Programs are<br />

available to all students desiring to improve<br />

reading and study skills such as comprehension<br />

and retention, critical reading,<br />

speed reading, vocabulary building and note<br />

taking. Students who experience difficulties<br />

with texts or other books are encouraged to<br />

obtain individual aid. Help with written<br />

language is also available on an individual<br />

basis. Students for whom English is a<br />

second language are offered intensive<br />

instruction.<br />

The Reading Center houses a<br />

collection of paperback books and instructional<br />

texts for loan as well as E.D.L.<br />

Controlled Reading machines and Tachistoscope<br />

for use in the improvement of<br />

reading ability.
