MIS 28 • File Concepts • 3 credits<br />

The techniques of designing and building efficient<br />

computer-based files. The course also includes<br />

data base design and management. Laboratory<br />

fee $25.<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

MIS students: MIS 22, 24, 26 (one may be taken<br />

concurrently).<br />

MAS students: MIS 22. 24.<br />

MIS 29 • Systems Practicum II • 3 credits<br />

This course is designed to place the student in a<br />

real-world environment. The student will be<br />

assigned the task of the completion of an<br />

independent systems study, in an organizational<br />

environment.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

MIS 28. May be taken concurrently,<br />

MIS 30 • Systems Hardware & Software • 6<br />

credits<br />

This course introduces the student to computer<br />

architecture and the interfaces with the system<br />

software. The hardware and software technology<br />

of mini and micro computers is also studied. Data<br />

communications, on-line real time processing and<br />

PACKET broadcasting are included in this course<br />

along with data management systems, languages<br />

and their translators. Laboratory fee $25.<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

MIS 21 and two programming Courses (MIS 22. 24<br />

or 26) and junior standing,<br />

MIS 35 • Internship • 6 credits<br />

The students will spend from 25 to 40 hours per<br />

week for a minimum of 14 weeks with one<br />

organization. He or she will receive six credits for<br />

successful completion of the internship. This<br />

success is determined by the work supervisor of<br />

the student, the Director of Cooperative<br />

Education, and the chairman of the MIS<br />

department.<br />

Consent of the Director of Cooperative Education.<br />

SECRETARIAL SCIENCE<br />

SS 1 • Shorthand I Theory and Dictation to 60<br />

Words Per Minute • 3 credits<br />

Planned to give the student a thorough knowledge<br />

of fundamentals. Emphasis is placed on good<br />

shorthand penmanship, accurate proportion and<br />

legibility, and mastery of basic vocabulary.<br />

SS 2 • Shorthand II Dictation: 60-80 Words Per<br />

Minute, and Transcription • 3 credits<br />

Designed to increase the student's shorthand<br />

vocabulary, the emphasis is on developing speed;<br />

and accuracy in typing mailable transcripts.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS I or permission of department chairman,<br />

SS 3 • Shorthand III Dictation: 80-100 Words<br />

Per Minute, and Transcription • 3 credits<br />

Emphasis is placed on mastery of the technical<br />

vocabularies of the more important lines of<br />

business: banking, insurance, real estate,<br />

manufacturing, merchandising, transportation,<br />

Daily transcription practice with emphasis on<br />

mailable copy.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS 2 or permission of department chairman.<br />

SS 4 • Shorthand IV Dictation: 100-120 Words<br />

Per Minute, and Transcription • 3 credits<br />

The material used for dictation includes longer<br />

and more difficult business letters from technical<br />

fields, editorials, and reports. Transcription drills<br />

are continued to increase speed and accuracy.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS 3 or permission of department chairman.<br />

SS 6 • Legal Shorthand • 3 credits<br />

The dictation of legal terminology and definitions<br />

and their place in legal reports and documents.<br />

The special terms, both ordinary legal terms and<br />

Latin phrases, which are commonly used in law;<br />

the law of property, contracts and sales.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS 3.<br />

SS 7 • Medical Shorthand * 3 credits<br />

Application of shorthand principles to writing of<br />

medical words. Shortcuts and use of prefixes and<br />

suffixes applying to medical terms are stressed.<br />

Dictation includes case studies and articles from<br />

medical reports and medical journals.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS 3 and 17.<br />

SS 8 • Typewriting I Theory and Speed up to 35<br />

Words a Minute • 3 credits<br />

Correct posture at the machine, parts of the typewriter<br />

and their uses, and development of touch<br />

techniques with emphasis on the formation of<br />

correct habits as a foundation for speed and<br />

accuracy. Basic letter forms, tabulations, and<br />

manuscripts.<br />

SS 10 • Typewriting II 35-50 Words a Minute • 3<br />

credits<br />

Arrangements of business letters and envelopes,<br />

carbon copies, stencils and masters, tabulation<br />

and statistical matter, and rough drafts. Drill to<br />

increase speed, accuracy, and rhythm.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS 8 or permission of department chairman,<br />

SS 11 • Typewriting III 50-60 Words a Minute •<br />

3 credits<br />

Manuscripts, billing, statements, legal documents<br />

and business papers, secretarial assignments.<br />

Drills to perfect stroking technique and rhythm.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS 10 or permission of department chairman.<br />

SS 13 • Typewriting IV Executive • 3 credits<br />

This course will not only broaden the student's<br />

knowledge of typewriting, but will also develop the<br />

student's ability to use judgment, to be creative, to<br />

be responsible for complete projects, to be able to<br />

work under normal office conditions, and to be<br />

able to produce professional work.<br />

Prerequisite:<br />

SS 11 or permission of department chairman.<br />

SS 17 • Medical Terminology • 3 credits<br />

This course offers the student a thorough<br />

knowledge of medical terms and their usage.<br />

Emphasis is placed on developing a technical<br />

vocabulary through analysis of word elements and<br />

case studies,<br />

SS 18 • Medical Laboratory Procedures • 3<br />

credits<br />

Theory and practice in medical procedures<br />

include medical ethics, transmission of disease,<br />

physical examinations and treatments, principle of<br />

medications, first aid rules, and routine laboratory<br />

techniques
