Chapter 1 – <strong>HFI</strong> within Naval Capability Acquisition<br />

• To assess, evaluate and aid acceptance of the HF characteristics of<br />

platforms and equipment during the development process to ensure that<br />

the design supports effective, efficient, safe and acceptable job and task<br />

performance.<br />

• To ensure that Health and Safety standards and legislation are fully<br />

observed.<br />

• To ensure that the service conditions and quality of life onboard is<br />

acceptable to RN personnel and supports retention.<br />

• To ensure that cost-effective training and support for skills and knowledge<br />

development is provided onboard and ashore in accordance with training<br />

1.2.4 <strong>HFI</strong> Technical Areas for Naval Systems<br />

The scale of naval equipment procurement ranges from the acquisition of<br />

complete new platforms and/or equipment systems to the provision of specific<br />

items of equipment for existing vessels. The procurement process itself may<br />

occur over a number of phases and involve requirements specification, design<br />

assessment and acceptance into service. <strong>HFI</strong> technical issues must be<br />

addressed in an appropriate manner at each phase of procurement for each type<br />

of platform or equipment. To support the naval procurement process, a series of<br />

‘<strong>HFI</strong> Technical Areas’ has been established with the following purposes:<br />
