134 HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY CHRONICLE.
NOTES ON THE GAME.
Ueut. Campbell won the toss, and decided
to bat, Major Hill and Lieut. Halswelle opening
our batting. Major Hill, however, was sent
back, being out to a fine catch at leg. Lieut.
Davis was suffering from want of sleep, as he
had previously travelled up from Hoylake.
His eyes were shut when he was bowled.
Capt. Twynam followed, and gave a finished
display for 33. He hit well all round the
wicket. LieiIt. Campbell got a "moon."
I am inclined to think he was not feeling very
well, as his bowling was not up to its usual
excellence. Pte. Cammell made 26, but it
was a miserable display; he is too fond of
slogging. Pte. Barron, a new colt, played for
us, and took 15 in good style. Pte. Gunn
collected 6 not out; his name implies that he
oUght to have got more. We were all out for
127.
Lieut. Campbell and Lieut. Davis opened
the bowling. The latter was still asleep, and
sent down terrible stuff. Capt. Twynam,
who, later on, gave a. very fine exhibition of
bowling and fielding, missed Mr. M'Donald at
cover, which cost us a good many runs. Lieut.
Campbell dropped a difficult one. After we
dismissed Mr. M'Donald, the Regiment fielded
extremely well. Lieut. Hal1swelle again got a
" balloon" at cover, and he had to'run for it
as usual. He brought off a magnificent
catch, for which he got a lot of applause.
Capt. Twynam bowled with his head, and it
is a great pity the Selection Committee for
the Test Matches could not have been present.
He fielded very well, and missed nothing.
Pte..Gunn kept wicket extremely well, letting
very few byes. Capt. Martin fielded extremely
well. He caught a good catch, and was very
neat with his hands at ground work. We
ought to have done better, and got them out
for less. Mr. M'Donald batted extremely well
for the Saints, but he was missed twice.
NOTES ON THE GAME.
We were at full strength, barring Capt.
Twynam, whose bones seem in a preoarious
oondition. Grant Peterkin had assembled a
very useful side together. We batted first,
Major Hill and I,ieut. Davis opening the game.
Major Hill only made 3 when he was olean
bowled by Major M'Lean. Lieut. Dam made
one or two good strokes, and then returned one
to the bowler. We recommend him to try a
new bat, as his sounds very woody. Lieut.
Bryant played beautiful oricket again. Major
Noyes joined the happy band of moonlighters.
Pte. Cammell again played his favourite stroke
-a slog at a straight ball; result, egg. It is
a great pity he has developed this game; it
is not oricket, and the sooner he tries to play
the bowling the better. Lieut. Halswelle Wll.S
sent· back by a good one. All this time Lieut.
Bryant was giving the speotators some delightful
strokes. Pte. Welfare gave a great
exhibition, timing the ball beautifully, and
hitting all round the wioket. He made 38 in
a J eSBopian fashion. This really was the
finest batting display any private in the
Regiment has given for some years, as the
bowling and fielding were quite good, and he
