HIGHLAND· LIGHT I~FANTRY CHRONICLE. 143
great effort, but this year he has been out of
luck. Lieut. Halswelle has been responsible
for many very fine catches in the deep field,
and has also batted verv well on several
occasions. He will be a loss to the team next
year, .as he is at the Depot now. Lieut.
Pringle, who has latterly become our stumper,
has carried out his duties very well, considering
that at times he has had some "terrible
stuff" to deal with behind the sticks. Re
has, on one or two occasions, put down the
wickets with everything except the ball;
but he has developed this into a fine art.
His batting is rather "3rd class shotty" at
times. He may miss, he may hit (as his
average shows), but he can keep his end up
if requir~d.. Captain ·Martin always plays
very neatly, and has on several occasions
f1.elded like a book. Lieut. ThlJ,ckeray performs
some wonderful evolutions at tbe wicket.
He can play with his wrists, if he wants to,
but he is rather fond of the "playing back
stroke," which he has more than once demonstrated
too often. He won t.he Forres match
for us. He has a wonderful sweater, which
{)ccasionally paralyses our opponents. He
has caug11t some good catches. J,.-CorpL
WeUare has· done exceedingly well this season
[loth with bat and ball. His bowling has
at. times been very good; sometimes he goes
off the mark, but he has the remarkable
analysis of 52 "rickets at a cost of 9'6 each.
He has several times battedextremelv well,
making his luns very quickly, and 'hitting
the ball verv hard. Pte. Cammell has batted
very well, a~d nses his "'lists. He has a very
good drive on the off side. He is our first
cbange bowler. He is sometimes very erratic,
but on the whole he has played very well.
A word of praise is dne to Joy, our professional,
who has worked ext.remelv hard the
whole season, both at the nets ~nd at the
ground. He has always given us an excellent
wicket; several times he has played for us,
and taken several wickets. He has heen out
{)f luck batting. He has carried out the
.arduous task o(umpire in our larger matches,
and has performed this duty exceedingly
welL
Staff-Sergeant Hayball has always scored
for us, and is fit to take his place amongst
any of the county ground scorers.
We congrat.ulate " B" Company on winning
the Cricket IJeague, and also the Company
Cricket Cup. There was never much high
scoring in the cup ties, and some of the other
Companies ought to have made a better show.
I enclose the howling and batting averages
for the year. It is a pity that Lieut. Bryant
just missed his 1000 runs. Captain Twynam,
Pte. Pinkhard, and Pte. Scevity, can hardly be
call~d at. the top of the howling analysis, as
they have not bowled very much. However,
