The balance credit of £51 6s. Id. is being
expended as was originally agreed upon if any
money remained over after the Memorial had
been paid for, viz., in placing a brass tablet
in St. GHes Cathedral, Edinburgh, to the
memory of those of the H.L.I. who died in
South Africa during the war.
F')r the information of those subscribers
who were not present at the unveiling, nor
have had an opportunity of seeing the memorial,
I may say it meets with universal approval,
is most artistic, and in a very picturesque
site:, moreover, the design-a mass of huge
boulders surmounted by a rough.hewn stone
monument, on which is a well-posed figure
of a Private of the H.L.I. in fighting-kit-is
exceedingly effective, and quite different
from the usual type of memorials.
The sculptor, Mr. Birnie Rhind, of Edinburgh,
is certainly to be congratulated on his
work, and the thanks of all are due to Captain
Fleming Hamilton for the trouble he has taken
