RESTORATION OF REGIMENTAL
COLOURS AT INVERARAY CASTLE.
THE ceremony of presenting and placing four
old war-worn regimental colours which had
been carried by the old 91st and 74th Highlanders-two
colours belonging to each of
these distinguished regiments-took place at
Inveraray Castle recently. The colours had
been bequeathed to the late Duke of Argyll
by the late Lady Riddel of Strontlan. They
were badly worn. and the work of restoring
. them had bElen successfully performed by
Miss Jessie Campbell of Connel. The 91st
colours are painted, while the 74th colours are
embroidered by hand. All the flags are much
faded, but the distinctive mottoes, &c., can
be distinctly traced. Lord Archibald Campbell,
as representing the Argyll family, was present,
and along with him were Major Byng M.
Wright, 5th Volunteer Battalion Argyll and
Sutherland Highlanders, accompanied by Col.­
Sergt. Instructor Cook, Col.-Sergt. Duncan
MacIntosh, Sergt. John Rose, and Sergt.
Gideon Scott, and also the Rev. J. F. Dawson
(paris!.! minister), Provost MacLean, Major
Buchanan, Mr. E. J. Sim (Clerk of Works),
Mr. H. D. Smith, Mr. A. and Miss Campbell of
Connel. Major Wright IT,lad~ the presentation.
Lord Archibald, in thanking Major Wright,
said that the colours were far gone, but Miss
Campbell's skilful work had done much to
preserve them. His family were proud to be
the custodians of the colours of the 74th
Highlanders, and he said the house. of Argyll
had at all times been supporters of the Throne
and of the British Army. The Provost cornplimented
Lord Archlbald on the interest his
lordship had manifested in the welfare of the
Highland Regiments. He referred to the
gallant achievements of the old 74th in India,
and in other quarters of the globe, and of the
arduous march of the Regiment in Egypt in
1882, and the brave' fight at Tel-~l-Kebir,
where the 74th so greatly distinguished itself,
and suffered so severely. The Inveraray Pipe
Band discoursed lively selections; and the

were being put in position. ~.
[I cannot trace the history C!f the 'old '74th
colours. It is possible that they are colours
of the previous 74'th Argyll Highlanders, who
were raised in 1778, and disbanded in 1783.
Perhaps some of our readers can clear up this
