Since the beginning of the new year, sport
in the Detachment has been rather fiat, but
the arrival of a detachment of the 1st Middlesex
Regiment (" B" and "K" Companies)
wakened things up a bit. After several
friendly encounters of a give·and.take nature,
a six-a-side football tournament was started,
and each section had to furnish a team.
That made in all twenty teams, and several
good matches were witnessed. Of course, as
we all know, there is not much room in a six-aside
match for the display of good football, as
it is usually the man with the best staying
power who can get there; still, nevertheless,
some good individual play was put in on
several occasions. ..
Matches were of ten minutes each way, with
five minutes' interval. In three or four of the
games, this time was not sufficient to allow
of any scoring, and extra time had to be played
to decide who were the winners.
Our friends the Middlesex held their own,
and managed well in the running up. They
got one team into the final, but were beaten
by No. 1 Section, "H" Company, by two goals
to one.
Space will not permit of a description of
each of the games. Hard work was prominent
in all of them, and, judging from the applause
of the spectators, the football was keenly
criticised. The best of good feeling, however,
prevailed throughout the tournament, and,
though at times the referee's decision did not
always please everybody, still there was no
bloodshed.
We had planned to have a great many more
games of all sorts with our friends the Middlesex,
as they were expected to stay much longer
at Dum Dum. Their hurried departure, however,
upset the arrangements, and once again
we had to remark with the poet that "the
best laid schemes, etc., gang aft agley."
The following are the draws, and the results
of the matches ;
ATHLETICS.
On 23rd February a cross-country race was
to the far end of the maidan and back.
Individual prizes were given, and also a
prize to the Company that scored the lowest
