Ross County won the toss, and opened with Mr. Wallaee and Dr. Leggett, to the bowling of Lieut. Campbell and Joy (plO.). No one except Mr. Wallace was able to do mueh with the bowling; but Mr. Wallace batted steadily and carefully for 20, when he was bowled by Lieut. Campbell. The whole !;tide only reaehed the poor total of 58. IJient. Campbell had 5 wickets for 15 runs; L.-CorpL Welfare, 3 for 16; and Joy, 1 for 17. Major Hill and Lieut. Bryant opened our innings, to the bowling of Tobutt (pro.) and Dunbar. I,ieut. Bryant, after making 9, WaR caught; but, although wickets fell rapidly, Major Hill batted beautifully, and undoubtedly won the' match for us, as no One made any length of stay with him. Lieut. Campbell-who, as usual, tried to hit, with disastrous results-was bowled for 5. Major Hill was tht'n out for a capi.tal 35. Pte. Cammell played well for 14, and the innings closed for 99. We had a very pleasant outi.ng, thanks to the hospitality of Mr. Wallace, who gave us an excellent luneh at the Spa Hott'l, and we can strongly recommend anyone who is suffering from liver or any other common eomplaint of that sort to pay a visit to Strathpeffer, and try the waters, and then there will be less grousing ! ! ! 2ND BATT. 138 HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY CHRONICLE. both teams were ready to play, and Elgin were going in to bat, rain came down so steadily that it was arranged to play again on the 12th. Elgin opened none too promising, losing two wickets for four runs, but Captains Gordon and Milne batted steadily, Gordon, .after being missed in the slips (first ball), hitting hard and well, till he was bowled by Bryant in attempting a full to leg. Grant filled the vacancy, and batted steadily and patiently for 21. No one else did much to mention, and the innings closed for 79. For the Regiment, Bryant bowled exceedingly well, taking 5 wickets for 25; Pte. Cammell, 2 for 18 ; Pte. Pinkhard, 2 for 5; and Lieut. Campbell, 1 for 19. Major Hill and I.ieut. Halswelle opened our innings, but the start was none too good, as, with only two runs on the board, Major Hill was unfortunate enough to be caught at short leg. Lieut. Bryant then joined Halswelle, .and the stand of the match was made, both playing capital cricket. The score was taken to 44, when Halswelle was bowled by Milne; then wickets fell rapidly, Bryant being bowled by Gordon with a Yorker, and there ~re nine wickets down for 76, chiefly owing to Captain Gordon's deadly bowling. Major Armstrong then joined L. -CorpI. Welfare, who had been batting with great skill and judgment. It must have been the worst moment of the Major's life when he had to take his first ball from Gordon, who looked as if he meant business-and he did, for the ball only just missed the wickets by about an eighth of an inch, and went for two byes, the wicket-keeper evidently thinking it would bowl him. Over was then called, and Welfare put the issue beyond doubt, making the winning hit amidst lond applause. The score was taken to 101, when Welfare was caught at mid-off for a capital 31. He showed great judgment and restraint, and, coming when they did, his runs were invaluable to his side. Major Armstrong carried out bis bat, and great credit must be given him for the way he played in keeping his wicket up, as he must have had several anxious moments. The honours of the match entirely rested with Lieut. Bryant and L.-CorpL Welfare, and it was entirely. due to t.hese two that we were enabled to take two points off Elgin, who are a gooa team, and in Capt.ain Gordon they have a da.ngerous but a good bowler. This match was played at the Depot Barracks, Inverness, resulting in a win for us by 6 wickets. We won the toss, but put our opponents in on a somewhat tricky wicket, though it was not so bad as it looked, judging from the runs we made. I,ieut. MacIntosh and Sergt. Casely opened for the Depot, to the bowling of Lieut. CampbeU and L.·Corpl. Welfare. Sergt. Casely had hard liJlesin playing the first ball he had on to his wicket, while Lieut. MacIntosh, after several good strokes, was bowled by Campbell, who seemed to have got some of his old form back, after a somewhat disappointing three weeks' failure to take wickets. With the exception of Major Brown, who played a good t~ough somewhat lucky game for his side,. no one else was able to cope with the bowhng-the whole side being out for 69. Lieut. Campbell and Welfare bowled unchanged, the former having 8 wickets for 26, and the latter 2 for 38. We opened our innings with Major Rill and
