THE MILITARY CHAMPIONSHIP.
CHALLENGE ROUND.
-SUCCESS OF THE HOLDERS.
IN the challenge round of the Military
Racquets Championship, at Prince's Club on
Saturday, the 2nd Battalion Highland Light
Infantry for a time had to struggle hard to
maintain the title they have held since 1901,
, but in the end their superior combination, and
the' great facility shown by Mr. Balfour
Bryant for killing the ball, triumphed, and
after a tame last game the 1st I,ife Guards
were beaten by four games to two. The close
chi\racter of the early part of the match is
shown by the fact that the first game was
" set" at 14 all, and the second at 13 all,
while ih the third the scores were called
10 all before the Guardsmen got possession
and won. Then a game was won somewhat
easily by each, but the promise of an exciting
finish was destroyed by the Highlamlers in the
last game getting in at " love all," and reaching
" game ball" in their two hands. The honours
cif the match were easilv secured by Mr.
Balfour:Bryant and Mr. i J. Astor, bilt the
former' hit the harder, and was more often
successful in gaining the sproke. Capt. Guest
was more reliable than in the preliminary
matches, but the dash which was such a
material factor towards the defeat of the
Rifles on Thursday was seldom in evidence.
Mr. Bramwell-Davis, as usual, was very steady,
both in service and in the court, where he
s~ldom failed in getting the ball up. The
'gallery was well fined, among the Army
officers and other visitors being General Sir
R. Harrison, General Leach, Colonel Sloggett,
Sir Wm. Hart Dyke, Hon. H. Storer, M.V.O.,
Mr. W. M. Astor, Captain Hon. Yarde-Buller,
