CHARLES KENNEDY, V.C., LATE H.L.I.<br />

THE following account of the death of Charles<br />

Kennedy, V.C., who won the Victoria. Cross<br />

with the Regiment in South Africa, is taken<br />

from the " Galloway Gazette" :­<br />

:~i An exceedingly sad affair occurred on<br />

Wednesday forenoon in East Montgomery<br />

Place, Edinburgh, when Cha.rles Kennedy,<br />

2 Castle Wynd, formerly of the <strong>Highland</strong> Light<br />

Infantry, met his death under tragic circum·<br />

stances. Observing that a young and restive<br />

horse attached to a. contractor's cart had<br />

bolted, Kennedy pluckily rushed forward to<br />

stop it, but was struck by one of the shafts and<br />

knocked to the ground. A wheel passed over<br />

his body and inflicted injuries of such a serious<br />

nature that he died while being conveyed to<br />

the <strong>Royal</strong> Infirmary. Kennedy was thirty.<br />

two years of age. He was a nephew of Mr.<br />

William Nibloe, bowling.gre!\n keeper, Port·<br />

patrick, and his name has already appeared<br />

in these columns as a winner of the Victoria<br />

Cross, under daring circumstances, in the<br />

South African Campaign. Private Kennedy<br />

won his V.C. in the Orange Free State. During<br />

the siege of Dewetsdorp cthe British force lost
