HIGHLAND .LIGHT' INFANTRY: CHRONICLE. 67 ----------~~----------~~ a good position on what was called the Crow's Nest. Volunteers were called for, and, along with other six men, Kennedy made an endeavour to retake the position. The British had taken good cover, but Private M'Gregor, one of the seven, went to get some water to quench the thirst of his comrades, and, before he had proceeded a dozen yards, was shot through the mouth by an explosive bullet. Kennedy ran to help his wounded comrade, and, getting him on his back and carrying his own and his comrade's rifle, ran down the hill under a heavy fire to the place where the doctor was stationed. On other occasions Kennedy volunteered to carry messages from one position to another in spite of fierce rifle fire each time. Several times he got through without a single scratch, but when taking a message across the zone of fire to Major Massey he fell seriously wounded when thirty yards distant from the gun-pit. His acts of bravery were witnessed by several Officers, and his name was mentioned in dispatches, earning for him the coveted V.C. Previous to this time the young linesman was well known in Portpatrick, where he occasionally spent his furlough holidays. The indomitable Scottish pluck which was so frequently displayed in his soldier days characterised him to the end, and his death caused general regret in Portpatrick when the news became known. FUNERAL OF CHARLES KlIlNNEDY, V.C. EXTRAORDINARY SCENES IN EDINBURGH. PUBLIC interest was aroused in a remarkable degree at the tragic death of Charles Kennedy, V.C., in Edinburgh the other day, while bravely endeavouring to stop a runaway horse in East Montgomery Street. A manifestat~on of that sympathy and interest was seen yesterday when Kennedy's remains were interred in North Merchiston Cemetery. The citizens turned out in their thousands to see the funeral, and the whole route along which the cortege passed was lined by crowds of sympathetic and curious sightseers. Kennedy's body had lain since the accident in the City Mortuary, and it was within the forbidding precincts of that building at the foot of Infirmary Street that the mourners paid their last respects to the dead. After a short service had been conducted by Mr. Donald Ross, West Port United Free Church, an old Sunday School teacher of the deceased, and the Rev. W. W. Clark, assistant chaplain to the Castle garrison, six stalwart Seaforth Highlanders entered the room and bore the coffin out to the gun carriage of the Scots Greys, which was waiting outside. START OF THE PROCESSION. A Union Jp,ck was then spread over the coffin, and the procession was started. Several policemen led the way,. and then came the pipe band of the Seaforth Highlanders, under Pipe Major Gordon. The gun carriage came next, and Kennedy's relatives followed. Behind them marched twenty Seaforth Highlanders, under the command of Lieutenant Hepburn, and the general mourners, including Colour Sergeant Gray and Colour-Sergeant M'Guchan, of the H.L.I., from Hamilton, and many veterans, members of the Edtnburgh H.L.I. Association, brought up the rear. . As the cortege proceeded up Infirmary Street an extraordinary scene was presented. Around there was a huge crowd, and progress wall.'" made with difficulty. The spacious steps leading to the Museum accommodated a great many people, while the high ground known as Society was largely taken advantage of. Along Forrest Road and into Lauriston the procession wended its way slowly, as it had to, owing to the great crowd. While there was such a number of people lining the streets, several hundred young men and women, and youngsters galore, hustled each other in an attempt to keep up with the funeral party. They even broke the ranks of the mourners. A constable attempted to , check the progress of those thoughtless people. but it was fruitless. When Tollcross watt reached .some doubt was expressed as to what route would be followed, and a less suitable road than that taken could not have been chosen. Going along Earl Grey Street, the party turned into Fountainbridge, and in that narrow thoroughfare the 90ngestion' was extreme. All this time a huge crowd had been waiting in the vicinity of the cemetery. A surging crowd stood at the cemetery gates, and a small force of p()lice experienced great difficulty in making a passage for the procession. There was a great crush, and for a few minutes there was a strange medley-the wails of the bagpipes as the cortege approached, the shouts of the police, and the piteous cries of children as they w~re pushed hither and thither.
