Next Generation Networks are evolving to support
multiple services over multiple access technologies.
This means delivering a uniform service
regardless of the type of access used.
Always reachable, anywhere, any device.
Newport Network 1460 delivers the essential proxy
and gateway functions required in wireline and wireless,
IMS-based, Next Generation Networks. The
1460 can be deployed either as a stand-alone session
border controller or as physically separate signalling
and media functions, providing Proxy-Call Session
Control Function (P-CSCF) and Border Gateway
Function (BGF) components respectively.
This intrinsic flexibility allows carriers to plan the
growth of their infrastructure practically and economically,
so that new services can be introduced on
minimal infrastructure by co-hosting functions such
as P-CSCF and Interconnect-Border Control Function
(I-BCF) on a single node. As service traffic grows, the
functions can be distributed across multiple devices
providing efficient re-use of hardware and software.
The 1460 has been designed to meet tier-1 carrier
requirements for resilience and reliability. A single
1460 chassis exceeds ‘five 9s’ availability and all
sub-systems can be replicated so that there is no single
point of failure. Distribution of functions across
multiple chassis further enhances overall system
availability.
In addition to existing voice services, these new networks
will support conversational video, streaming
video, Instant Messaging and even broadcast TV.
They will also need to meet regulatory requirements
such as Lawful Intercept (LI) and Emergency Call
Handling (ECH). The 1460 provides the necessary
support for LI and ECH from day one.
The 1460 SignallingProxy supports the following
functions:
P-CSCF
The first point of contact, proxying the services of a
remote server and providing ECH and LI capabilities
close to the call origination. If required, it can enable
the secure traversal of CPE-based NAT and firewall
devices, and implement topology hiding to prevent
service theft and security breaches. The policing of
signalling messages can also help protect downstream
devices from IP or SIP signalling attacks.
I-BCF
Where required the 1460 can perform the Border
Control Function, policing signalling, performing
topology hiding and generating call details records at
the interconnection point. It can also interface to
one or more Border Gateways to implement QoS policies,
manage media policing and deliver firewalling
functions.
THIG
The Topology Hiding function can be implemented
with any of the above functions, thus providing flexibility
in designing the IMS core.
The 1460 MediaProxy supports the following functions:
I-BGF/C-BGF
The 1460 MediaProxy protects and secures the media
flows. Acting under the control of an I-BCF or CSCF,
the MediaProxy opens and closes media pinholes,
polices the media flows and implements QoS marking,
ensuring that services requested in the signalling
match the delivered media.
