have been given - to take part in leadership and governance in the<br />

district, the region, and the Institute - are an important consequence<br />

of this non-clerical character.<br />

My Challenges<br />

There have been times over the years when I have asked, “Is this<br />

what I should be doing Is this what God wants me to do with my<br />

life at this time” When I didn’t know the answer, I tried faithfully<br />

to address it, through prayer, some type of study or research, and a<br />

spirit of openness. As I look back it is clear that at each such juncture,<br />

an opportunity arose or an invitation was offered that kept me<br />

involved in the <strong>La</strong>sallian mission.<br />

My own continued experience of finding new invitations and more<br />

involving opportunities throughout my life in the <strong>La</strong>sallian world<br />

is the reason that I place so much importance on providing<br />

<strong>La</strong>sallian educators with opportunities for formation, in such programs<br />

as the <strong>La</strong>sallian Leadership Institute. The more aware we<br />

become of this mission and its spirit - through study, through networking<br />

and mutual encouragement, through taking on greater<br />

responsibilities, through immersion programs in which we meet the<br />

poor in various parts of the world - the better educators we can be.<br />

It has been through such experiences that my vocation has been<br />

deepened, and I am convinced that it is through such experiences<br />

that others’ vocations are deepened as well.<br />

Of course, one of the challenges of a vocation that is both demanding<br />

and fulfilling is the need to fulfil the commitments of work and<br />

the commitments of family. Rosanne and I have been married for<br />

22 years, and we have three children, now 18, 15, and 12 years of<br />

age. My vocation as husband and father must be balanced with my<br />

work, which sometimes requires long hours, travel, and absences<br />

that can extend over weekends or several days. The need for balance
