A display of hot clay at an exhibit at Idyllwild Arts’ Parks Exhibition Center organized by Ingrid Lilligren. For the uninitiated, and according to Lilligren, hot clay becomes ceramic when heated to a certain temperature in a process she refers to as heat, fermentation and transformation. Lilligren had invited nationally recognized guest artists from all over of the United States to take part in this exhibition which formally began Monday, June 26. By Marshall Smith Staff Reporter The Ribbonwood Fire that broke out at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 21 in the Gardenlands neighborhood of Pinyon, was largely contained by 11:45 a.m. after having burned roughly 2 acres of dense brush and chaparral on a steep hillside. Although smoke was visible, especially from one section near the top of the ridge to where the fire had burned, there were no signs of flames shortly after 11 Fire crews contain Ribbonwood Fire a.m. Cleanup crews were moving into the area of the fire around 11:30 a.m. U. S. Forest Service Operations Director Gregg Ross said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but “signs point to a downed power line” as the initial flash point. Highway 74 was open for one-way traffic, even in the area where fire engines were parked since the fire itself was at least an eighth of a mile from the roadside. Power was restored to Paradise Cafe at the junc- tion of highways 74 and 371 at about 11:50 a.m. having been out since the outbreak of the fire. Paradise Corners is about 3 miles from the site of the fire. Riverside County Fire Department Public Information Officer Patrick Chandler said that weather conditions were favorable to controlling the blaze. Crumrine Assistant Editor As of Friday, June 23, Riverside County Fire Chief Thomas O’Keefe has suspended all burning permits in the county. Throughout the current period of high temperatures and low humidity, no burning will be allowed. If the weather conditions change, O’Keefe said the suspension may be lifted. The extreme heat and dry vegetation substantially raises the risk of wildfire, O’Keefe said. The only exception to O’Keefe’s order in Riverside County is within incorporated cities. The county’s press release suggested other safety tips during fire season: Use equipment to clear property before 10 a.m., not in the heat of the day or when the wind is blowing. Lawn mowers were designed to mow lawns, not dry vegetation. Spark arresters are required on all portable gasoline-powered equipment including chainsaws, weed eaters, mowers, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. In addition, any type of fireworks, including sparklers, are prohibited within the unincorporated areas of Riverside County. Fines and other penalties have been raised this year to try to reduce the number of injuries and accidental fires. Riverside County public safety agencies will have no toleranec for illegal fireworks; they will be confiscated. No personal fireworks are permitted in the San Jacinto Ranger District. J.P.
