Smokey Bear signs warn of fire danger
By J.P. Crumrine
Assistant Editor
Sunday, the fire danger
on the Hill was very
high. Visitors to the Hill
and residents needed only
to pay attention to the
Smokey Bear signs to know
that. These signs stand
prominently in front of the
district office in Idyllwild
and each guard station
displaying the daily fire
danger within the San
Jacinto Ranger District.
The daily fire danger is
based on the immediate
weather and other local
conditions, such as humidity,
wind speed, recent rain,
plant moisture and others.
Santa Ana winds would affect
the daily fire danger.
In addition, the whole
San Bernardino National
Forest (SBNF) abides by
the fire use restriction
stages. These fire restriction
stages are based on
the season, climate, and
broader and more general
factors throughout the forest,
from Pinyon to Big
Bear. The use restrictions
change more slowly during
the season as the fuels
dry.
There are four stages.
Stage 4 conditions trigger
a forest closure.
Currently, the SBNF
is in Stage 1. This limits
wood and charcoal campfires
to developed sites
such as campgrounds, picnic
areas and yellow post
sites. California campfire
permits are required and
available at any ranger
station. Other restrictions
can be found on the SBNF
Web site or are available at
a ranger station.
“We tried to change the
system for notification, but
it created more confusion,”
said Norm Walker, San
Jacinto Ranger District
fire chief. “The standard
Smokey Bear points to the daily fire danger in the San Jacinto
Ranger District. A Smokey Bear fire announcement is in front
of each ranger and guard station and can be seen easily from
the highway.
