USPS mail fraud tip of the
week
Con artists know that working at home is an attractive
alternative for many. That’s why they place such ads. Maybe
you’ve even responded to one. Thousands of people have,
helping these unscrupulous promoters pocket millions of
victims’ hard-earned dollars.
Beware. Work-at-home schemes will not guarantee
regular-salaried employment. They will require you to invest
money before learning how a plan works or before you
are sent instructions. The work you are asked to do often
continues the fraud by getting other victims involved.
The most common type of work-at-home fraud is
envelope stuffing. Typically, there is nothing to stuff. Instead,
you receive instructions on how to deceive others
by placing an ad like the one you responded to. Other
schemes require you to assemble gift and specialty products
for which there is little or no market.
Always suspect any ad claiming you can earn unusually
high income with little or no effort on your part.
Anza man guilty
of injuring spouse

Steven Darrel Golem, 48,
of Anza was sentenced June
19 to 180 days in Riverside
County jail, with 31 days
credit for time served, for
felony infliction of corporal
injury on a spouse.
Jail time will be served on
consecutive weekends beginning
July 10 at the Larry D.
Smith Correctional Facility
in Banning as part of the
Riverside County Sheriff ’s
Department Weekender Program.
Golem, arrested on May
18, was initially booked on
two felony counts. The second
charge, assault with a
weapon likely to produce
great bodily injury, was
dropped as part of his plea.
As part of the terms of
sentencing, Riverside County
Superior Court granted
Golem probation for 36
months. Terms of probation,
which expires June 18, 2009,
include additional jail time
of 135 days, an obligation to
perform 20 hours of com-
munity service, and paying
fees of $1,017. In addition, he
must pay a $400 special fee
to a domestic violence fund,
as well as a fee for victim
restitution, the amount to
be determined by the court’s
financial services division.
Also, Golem must have
no negative contact with
victim Gina Gosselin. He
must not associate with any
unrelated person on probation
or parole, and he must
submit to the search of his
person, vehicle, residence
and any storage facilities by
law enforcement officials, at
any time, with or without
cause.
Golem must attend a
year-long domestic violence
program and provide proof
within 30 days of completion
and not later than Sept.
10, 2007. Other costs are
probation supervision not
to exceed $252, or if the
level of supervision required
escalates, to pay supervision
costs up to $1,908.
