Larger than life …
U n l e s s
we’ve lived
as a hermit,
when
w e d i e ,
o u r t i m e
o n E a r t h
may have
stopped but we leave a history
that has affected the world
within our sphere.
Many bright, talented people
whose paths have stopped
used their intelligence destructively
and left a historical trail
of ruin and harm, such as
militant leader Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi.
Others, such as Mother
Theresa, used her talents and
brilliance to effect positive
change for thousands of people
in need.
These are examples of people
whose sphere of influence
was worldwide. Their legacies
remain with us.
We have lost someone
whose presence was bigger
than Idyllwild. Dale Spickler,
who died Wednesday, June 21
after a strong fight with cancer,
was a man of compassion,
kindness, brilliance, generosity
and diplomacy.
Who of us who volunteer
did not serve with him He
gave generously of his time
to better this community, even
when he was ill: Idyllwild Community
Fund Advisory Board,
Friends of the San Jacinto
Mountain County Parks, Fern
Valley Water District board,
County Service Area 36 Advisory
Committee, Idyllwild
Rotary Club, county library
and the most perfect Santa
this town has ever had (sorry
Mike, we love you, too).
The Santa part was his
favorite. Besides volunteering
as Santa at any event where
he was asked — and he was
asked a lot — at Christmastime,
he and MaryAnn would
open their doors to the community.
Inside those doors was
a potpourri of holiday food,
drinks and Santa collections
everywhere. With snow on the
ground outside, jolly Dale playing
host and MaryAnn serving
food, you felt transported to
the North Pole. If you lacked
any Christmas spirit before arriving,
you left looking forward
to the holiday.
His compassion and love
effected positive change for the
people and the town. Dale, you
served us so well. Your legacy
remains with us. We love you
Dale and hope you are in a
better place.
‘Essence of
Idyllwild’ serves
everyone
Editor:
The true “Essence of
Idyllwild,” let me give you
my view. The Idyllwild
Chamber of Commerce has
given the award annually to a
lot of well-deserving people.
There are many groups in
this town that do so much
that it shows that groups of
people can work together in
Idyllwild.
I bet many people have
no idea what good things are
done for this town because
of caring people and that is
why I am writing this.
There is a group in town
that takes care of all the caring
people who want to make this
town something special.
What is it that group does
to take care of everyone
If you need a place to
take a test to get your food
handler’s license, maybe give
the local school a place to let
the kids swim in a pool, be
able to skateboard and soon
even think about your dogs
welfare, there’s a place.
All these other groups
that give money or time need
a place to make their money
so they have dinners, like the
Idyllwild Fire Department,
Idyllwild Arts, Rotary and
the list goes on and on.
A restaurant in town had
a problem with the health department
and needed a place
to bake. This place helped
them out, and the person
who helps all these people
be able to do what they do,
he himself is on many very
important committees and
gives his time there.
I hope you know whom I
am talking about by now. To
me, that is the true “Essence
of Idyllwild” who never asks
for anything but always
gives: Idyllwild Pines. I know
this time everyone will have
to agree with me.
Idyllwild
Avoiding a panic
Editor:
After working as a volunteer
with one of the organizations
that helps with the
4th of July celebration for
the past 6 years, I thought
I might pass along some
unofficial hints that might
help some Idyllwilders enjoy
the holiday even more.
1. If you live in Fern
Valley, plan on using Lodge
and South Circle to enter
and exit that area between
8:00 a.m. and noon. The 4
corners intersection at the
top of North Circle will
be nearly impassable with
entries lined up for the
parade. Your blood pressure
will skyrocket if you attempt
to access Fern Valley using
Pine Crest or North Circle.
2. If you are a business
owner on North Circle, warn
your employees who are
scheduled to arrive at work
between 10 a.m. and noon
that North Circle will be
closed down for the parade
at 10 a.m. and they should
leave for work early as they
may have to walk a block or
two to get to work. We will
probably have more tourists
than ever up here, and parking
will be difficult to find.
3. Merchants would be
wise to advise their delivery
services not to plan any deliveries
the first half of the
day and also advise your
business service personnel
(trash pick up, etc.) not to
plan on any pick ups until
later in the day.
4. I would urge anyone
who must use North Circle
Drive to enter or egress your
property to plan on doing
so either before (10 a.m.)
or after (noon) the parade.
By following the above
suggestions, you won’t have
to double up on your blood
pressure medicine and you
will be able to enjoy the
holiday celebration along
with the rest of us.
