he had to practice and work
to convince his teachers and
mentors that he was playing
on his own.
“He’s wonderful,” says Anne
Finch, chairman of this year’s
Jazz in the Pines.
Or “prize winning” is how
Hawkins speaks of Dechter. “He
stepped into a professional role
and is still a college-aged kid,”
he said with amazement.
Dechter’s success compares
to only two other Hawkins’
students — Evan Christopher
and the late Sam Karam.
Dechter and his trio performed
last year, but this year
they are being touted with the
mainline groups.
“It’s really cool,” he said. “It’s
a great honor to be showcased.
I know he is trying to showcase
the alumni, but it’s great to be
up on the billboard.”
Dechter is now the guitarist
in the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz
Orchestra. He’s already performed
at the Playboy Jazz Festival
in the Holiday Bowl and
looks forward to the Monterey
Jazz Festival this summer.
“It’s been great playing with
these guys. What an opportunity
to be immersed in this world!”
he said. “In this case, it’s like a
kid on a ride at Disneyland.”
Dechter attributes his early
success to what he learned
from Hawkins here at Idyllwild
Arts.
“He didn’t teach just to
the academic and classical
music standards, although it is
an academic-oriented school,”
Dechter stressed. “He taught
from the heart and soul and
not from the head. He doesn’t
care about every wrong note.
“Music and jazz are about
what you’re saying. Playing
is telling a story,” is how he
described Hawkins’ pedagogy.
“That’s what people connect
to.”
Hawkins offers many ways to
connect to jazz at the Idyllwild
Jazz in the Pines.
Ana-Lia Lenchantin
Back on stage after a threeyear
absence is Ana-Lia Lenchantin.
Originally from Argentina,
she lives in Idyllwild
now.
A pianist, her last public
performance was the 2003 Jazz
in the Pines. A few weeks later,
her son died and she stopped
performing.
“The only thing that keeps
me going is to go back to the
music for my son,” she said.
“This will be dedicated to him
and all the missing persons in
Parks
On the Town
EXHIBITION CENTER
Argentina.”
The people started to disappear
in Argentina nearly 30
years ago, Lenchantin said.
Finally a film — “The Captive”
— about this period was produced.
She wrote the music that
she will perform next month.
Even that will have a unique
quality. One of her fingers
is numb and not responding
properly. It affects her piano
playing.
“I have rearranged the composition
for nine fi ngers,” she
admitted.
Lenchantin’s first jazz fest
appearance was seven years ago.
Before that event, she had also
stopped performing.
“Marshall Hawkins and the
jazz fest are very important in
my life and career,” she said.
“He came to me and said, ‘You
have to come and play.’ After
that, I gained a new perspective
and my work went to a higher
level.”
Lenchantin also hinted that
she may bring a surprise with
her to the event. But Hawkins
is prepared.
“She always comes with a
surprise,” he said before Lenchantin’s
hint. “Her name is
important in music.”
Harry Pickens
Pickens is also returning to
another Jazz in the Pines. His
absences are unavoidable and
not scheduling conflicts. Family
illness and his concern to care
for his family kept him away
last year.
But this year, he plays both
days. “Idyllwild is like a second
home for me,” Pickens said.
“The people are like family.”
Pickens is more than a
consummate jazz pianist. He
is an organizational development
consultant and therefore
both an educator and speaker.
Not only has he taught music
throughout his musical career,
but he uses it as a metaphor
for life lessons.
He describes his current
project as “using the power
of music to help individuals,
organizations and communities
get in tune with their greatest
possibilities.”
Next week, he is in residency
with the Kentucky Center
Governor’s School for the Arts.
Pickens explain how performing
artists can change the world.
“Harry is a mainstay, a pillar,”
Hawkins said respectfully.
“He is one of the most important
treasures and natural
performers of the Jazz in the
Pines. No one other than Yve
Evans commands that respect.
The respect is just there because
he is unbelievable.”
And Pickens says, “I worship
the ground Marshall Hawkins
walks on. There’s a handful of
people who say, ‘Will you do
this’ Before they’re done, you
agree, Marshall is one of them
for me.”
The 13th-annual Idyllwild
Jazz in the Pines will come in
go in two days. The ephemeral
music, no matter how gracious,
will fade. But the teaching and
learning about the music and its
feelings will stay with us forever.
The audience will have lived,
loved and learned jazz.
