THE LACK <strong>of</strong> sensitivity<br />

in <strong>the</strong> transmitter tube made <strong>the</strong> pickup<br />

<strong>Farnsworth</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore determined<br />

that <strong>the</strong> next step<br />

in his program was to transmit motionpicture<br />

film successfully. This presented many and varied problems.<br />

The characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scanning process <strong>of</strong> a television<br />

transmitter tube and <strong>the</strong> operation <strong>of</strong> a motion-picture projector<br />

had to be reconciled. It was found that it was not feasible<br />

to transmit motion pictures by <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "shutter" type<br />

<strong>of</strong> motion-picture projector.<br />

To those unfamiliar with <strong>the</strong> operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> motion-picture<br />

projector it is necessary to explain that <strong>the</strong> action is produced<br />

by flashing onto <strong>the</strong> screen, at <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> twenty-four pictures<br />

per second, <strong>the</strong> individual frames which make up <strong>the</strong> film. The<br />

film is fed into <strong>the</strong> projector a frame at a time at <strong>the</strong> rate indicated.<br />

Each separate frame stops momentarily while it is flashed<br />

on <strong>the</strong> screen. While <strong>the</strong> next picture<br />

is<br />

being brought into<br />

place <strong>the</strong> screen is darkened by a shutter, so that during tw<strong>of</strong>ifths<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time in <strong>the</strong> ordinary projection <strong>of</strong> cinema film <strong>the</strong><br />

screen is dark. The eye, which continues to <strong>the</strong> register image<br />
